Locust Hill Golf Course Review

Charles Town, West Virginia, USAEastern West Virginia

Locust Hill Golf Course in Charles Town presents an 18-hole, public course blending varied elevations and thick fairway grasses that demand precision and strategy. Its gently hilly terrain offers an engaging challenge for golfers looking for an accessible yet thoughtfully demanding round.

Course Overview

Located in Charles Town, West Virginia, Locust Hill Golf Course offers an 18-hole experience that tests both strategy and stamina amid a gently hilly landscape. This public course presents a layout that winds through a residential subdivision, requiring players to maintain focus on shot placement as they navigate varied elevations and well-positioned hazards. While not a conventional championship track, Locust Hill challenges golfers with a course length that extends to around 7,000 yards from the back tees, demanding thoughtful club selection beyond relying solely on driver.

The terrain introduces a subtle interplay between long fairways and significantly thick rough, which can be especially punishing if shots stray even moderately off target. Fairways have been noted to grow unusually thick, sometimes making locating golf balls a demanding feat that can disrupt rhythm. The greens, while generally in serviceable condition, invite careful reading as their condition varies through the season. Players seeking an engaging round that requires precise ball striking and tactical thinking will find the course both stimulating and approachable, though those expecting immaculate surfaces or manicured fairways may encounter a course more aligned with earnest play than pristine presentation.

Amenities include a driving range for warm-ups and practice, although cart policies are documented to be somewhat restrictive, with age requirements for operation strictly enforced and limited availability of hand carts noted. The clubhouse serves as a central gathering point, though experiences with customer service have been mixed, advising future visitors to check current conditions and policies ahead of time.

Locust Hill’s layout encourages golfers of various skill levels to engage with a course that values precision and patience. Early morning or late afternoon tee times are advisable to avoid slower pace-of-play issues documented during peak periods. Players looking for a reasonably priced round in the greater Charles Town area will find that Locust Hill delivers an honest golf challenge wrapped in a no-frills package. The course rewards commitment to the game and offers a grounded West Virginia golf outing with a focus on course management in a setting that demands acute awareness and thoughtful navigation.

Course Highlights

I am looking for a good driving range; after reading the reviews, I’m seeing the owner may not be well suited for this business. I am happy to make an offer on his property, if he wants to sell and focus on politics. Pm me Owner or anyone else that would want to invest in a new club. Our area is lacking in the beginner/novice golf establishments. Ready for a new venture??

Website says must be 16 with a license to drive the golf cart. Son and a few of his friends went to golf, and we're denied use of a cart because they were not 18. Unfortunately there were no hand carts and it's 90 plus degrees today.

I had a great time at Locust Hill. I would say it was great value for the ~$55 cost for 18 holes. The course was not in spectacular condition, but it did not need to be. The holes are challenging and the grade is hilly at times. The layout was a little tricky to navigate as the course meandered through the subdivision. I did not expect a beverage cart, but was pleasantly surprised when one came around. We played from the White tees which tops out at about 6,400 yards. Many of the holes challenged you to use something other than driver off the tee. If we played from the Black tees at 7k yards, I probably would have opted for driver more often. All in all, I would describe the course as engaging, slightly deceptive and great value for the money.

Everyone who worked here was really nice, and the course was really pretty, that’s why it gets 2 stars. Pace of play was about 6 hours when we played, which meant a lot of waiting at each hole. In terms of playability, the course is in bad shape. The fairway grass is so long that you can lose your ball after hitting it straight down the center. Even if you don’t lose it, you still have to spend significant time looking for it. Legitimately, in the fairway, unless you’re within 15 feet of the ball you won’t see it. Sometimes feels like your ball is in the rough because the grass is so long, so once you find it you still have to adjust your shot for the thick grass. We lost about 15 dollars worth of playable balls in the rough (which is just slightly longer than the fairway) because you have to be fully on top of the ball to see it. Greens are okay but not great. Won’t play here again

Horrible service from the assistant manager. Truly avoid this golf course. Refused to price match what was offered online. Then double charged for a cart (2 people). We got a gift card (birthday gift) but the gift cards only works at the golf course and they charge a lot more. We were charged $20 per a golf cart and she charged two golf carts for two people…? I don’t know how she is the assistant manager she was awful and ruined the experience. She refunded us $15 dollars which wasn’t even for the cart. What a horrible experience to give someone. She even asked me to show the $21.99 pricing like I made it up and even after showering her she didn’t price match it. I don’t know who let her become assistant manager.
