WindRiver Golf Club

Lenoir City, Tennessee, USAEast Tennessee

WindRiver Golf Club is an 18-hole championship course in East Tennessee characterized by rolling hills, strategic blind shots, and fast greens. This layout offers a solid test for mid-to-low handicaps seeking a course that blends natural elevation with thoughtful design.

Course Overview

WindRiver Golf Club, located just outside Lenoir City, Tennessee, offers an 18-hole championship course that challenges players with its rolling hills and strategic blind shots. This course demands thoughtful club selection and patience, especially when navigating the elevation changes that shape much of its layout. While water hazards play a modest role, the terrain itself provides the primary challenge, with fairways that bend through natural contours and greens that test precision and touch. The putting surfaces run at a lively pace, often exceeding a Stimp reading of 10, putting a premium on steady putting and careful reading.

Set against a backdrop that hints of the nearby Smoky Mountains, WindRiver impacts every round with scenic panoramas and well-maintained fairways. The course layout rewards golfers who are prepared for undulating lies and are adept at managing approach shots that occasionally disappear from view until just moments before impact. Thoughtful bunkering protects several greens, providing both visual intimidation and tactical pitfalls.

WindRiver Golf Club caters primarily to players comfortable with moderate to high difficulty, making it appealing for mid-to-low handicap golfers seeking a test beyond straightforward parkland settings. The blend of long carries, blind shots, and firm, fast greens requires mental focus and a blend of shot-making skills. Despite its challenges, players frequently note the condition of the turf as a positive aspect that supports enjoyable play.

Amenities include a well-appointed clubhouse and dining facility, with the "Citico" restaurant offering meals for players before or after their rounds. While some guests have found service inconsistent, many highlight the courteous professionalism of the golf shop staff and course maintenance crew. Carts are available but with certain restrictions aimed at protecting turf during wet conditions, so those who enjoy walking will find the course an engaging and physical outing.

Planning your visit to WindRiver means preparing for hillier terrain and potentially brisk green speeds, especially during peak season. The course rewards players who balance strategic shot placement with patience, offering a rewarding experience for those up to the challenge near the edge of the Smoky Mountain foothills.

Course Highlights

WindRiver features a rolling landscape with long, uphill tee shots and blind approaches that challenge course management. The greens are firm and fast, often running above a Stimp 10 speed, requiring deft putting skills. Sand bunkers strategically protect many greens while the foothills of the Smoky Mountains create scenic vistas that frame the course experience.

Probably the worst kept golf course I've had the displeasure of playing. I don't even know where to begin. We ate at the "citico" which sounds like a gas station and the food was subpar to the point that I could get something better at a burger king and the prices are outrageous. Rude staff. You couldn't pay me to come back.

Long course layout. Lots and lots of hills and blind shots. Can be especially tiring if several or all holes are cart path only (thus my 3 star rating) . Fairways and greens are in good condition. Greens are nominally fast, stimp 10 or more. Not a lot of water in play. Not an excessive number of bunkers.

Not too far from I-75. Beautiful scenery, awesome course layout. Folks told me it would be tough, but I played to my handicap, so no complaining from me. There were only a few holes that gave you a tough, blind 2nd shot, and very little water comes into play. I would highly recommend playing this one. Great price, fun layout, staff was very helpful. Not sure how anyone could drop this place to a one star. Even if you are not happy with the staff, you spend most of the day on the course, not dealing with the staff. Great place, I will be back.

We paid the shocking $100 to play, which was $40 more than a couple of months ago. The course was in just ok shape…about average for the area. Since there’s a policy of no outside beverages, and the pro shop was closed, we had to go down in the basement of the building next door to get drinks. We ordered 6 and they were brought to us without any way to carry them back to cart. So I asked if they had a bag with ice to put them in. The lady handed me a brown paper bag with the drinks covered in ice! I’m not sure I’ve ever seen such poor golf course management, especially for the cost! Just bizarre!!!

We played the middle of April and the fairways are coming in. The greens are in good shape. There are a lot of blind shots, adds to the challenges plenty of sand bunkers but we really enjoyed our round. If they could do anything to improve it would be fix the carts that don’t go with a message that you are in a restricted area and we were on the cart path.

Very beautiful and challenging course set outside the Smokey Mountains. It’s a bit pricey for out of town rates $100 especially with the greens recently aerated. Putting was useless. I would suggest discounting the rate when you can’t play it in its pristine condition. Very friendly staff, from pro shop to restaurant. Food was excellent.
