WindRiver Golf Club
WindRiver Golf Club presents an elevated 18-hole challenge shaped by rolling hills and strategic bunkering just outside the Smoky Mountains. This semi-private layout rewards precise shotmaking and thoughtful course management, set against striking Appalachian foothills scenery.
Course Overview
WindRiver Golf Club stretches across rolling terrain just east of the Smoky Mountains in Lenoir City, Tennessee, delivering an 18-hole experience marked by both natural beauty and strategic challenge. This semi-private layout invites golfers seeking a test of precision and patience amid varied elevation changes and striking views. The course’s hilly topography and occasional blind shots require careful course management, rewarding players who maintain focus and adaptability throughout their round.
Though the course presents a fair degree of difficulty, particularly with its blind approaches and uneven terrain, it remains approachable for mid to low handicappers who relish a thoughtful challenge. Waters are sparingly used, which shifts the emphasis to the positioning of fairway bunkers and well-placed sand traps guarding many greens. The conditioning of fairways and greens tends to be solid, providing a reliable playing surface even during seasonal transitions, though golfers should expect varying green speeds depending on maintenance schedules, including aeration periods.
WindRiver’s layout unfolds with natural rhythm across its undulating landscape. Bunkers punctuate fairways and protect elevated greens, making accuracy off the tee and precise iron play essential. The dominant elements here are the hills – both a visual and strategic factor that demands patience, stamina, and a solid short game. The scenery reflects the Appalachian foothills, offering open vistas that frame each hole without imposing dense woods or water hazards, balancing beauty with a clear line of sight.
Amenities include a clubhouse with dining facilities praised for quality, allowing players to refuel post-round. Although golf carts are available, the course’s terrain and some cart-path-only segments can make walking demanding, so sturdy shoes and moderate expectations about pace of play are advisable. The staff's attentiveness adds to the experience, despite occasional critiques about service consistency.
Whether you approach WindRiver as a serious competitor or an adventurous amateur, the course offers a strong blend of tactical routes and scenic Tennessee landscape, making it a worthy stop for golfers exploring the region near the Smoky Mountains.
Course Highlights
The course is defined by its rolling hills and blind shots, which create a demanding test of skill. Fairways are guarded by strategically placed bunkers leading up to elevated greens. The absence of water hazards shifts focus to precision and elevation changes, making club selection and shot placement critical. Dining at the WindRiver Clubhouse offers a well-regarded conclusion to the round.

Long course layout. Lots and lots of hills and blind shots. Can be especially tiring if several or all holes are cart path only (thus my 3 star rating) . Fairways and greens are in good condition. Greens are nominally fast, stimp 10 or more. Not a lot of water in play. Not an excessive number of bunkers.

We played the middle of April and the fairways are coming in. The greens are in good shape. There are a lot of blind shots, adds to the challenges plenty of sand bunkers but we really enjoyed our round. If they could do anything to improve it would be fix the carts that don’t go with a message that you are in a restricted area and we were on the cart path.

Probably the worst kept golf course I've had the displeasure of playing. I don't even know where to begin. We ate at the "citico" which sounds like a gas station and the food was subpar to the point that I could get something better at a burger king and the prices are outrageous. Rude staff. You couldn't pay me to come back.

Not too far from I-75. Beautiful scenery, awesome course layout. Folks told me it would be tough, but I played to my handicap, so no complaining from me. There were only a few holes that gave you a tough, blind 2nd shot, and very little water comes into play. I would highly recommend playing this one. Great price, fun layout, staff was very helpful. Not sure how anyone could drop this place to a one star. Even if you are not happy with the staff, you spend most of the day on the course, not dealing with the staff. Great place, I will be back.

Very beautiful and challenging course set outside the Smokey Mountains. It’s a bit pricey for out of town rates $100 especially with the greens recently aerated. Putting was useless. I would suggest discounting the rate when you can’t play it in its pristine condition. Very friendly staff, from pro shop to restaurant. Food was excellent.

We paid the shocking $100 to play, which was $40 more than a couple of months ago. The course was in just ok shape…about average for the area. Since there’s a policy of no outside beverages, and the pro shop was closed, we had to go down in the basement of the building next door to get drinks. We ordered 6 and they were brought to us without any way to carry them back to cart. So I asked if they had a bag with ice to put them in. The lady handed me a brown paper bag with the drinks covered in ice! I’m not sure I’ve ever seen such poor golf course management, especially for the cost! Just bizarre!!!
