Dead Horse Lake Golf Course

Knoxville, Tennessee, USAEast Tennessee

Dead Horse Lake Golf Course presents a practical and approachable public 18-hole layout in the Knoxville area. Its gentle fairways and open greens cater to casual golfers looking for a relaxed round within an accessible setting.

Course Overview

Dead Horse Lake Golf Course offers a straightforward, budget-friendly golfing option for those seeking an accessible 18-hole experience just outside Knoxville, Tennessee. This public course presents a traditional layout primarily characterized by gentle elevation changes and open fairways interspersed with patches of mature trees. Its setting is functional rather than scenic, focusing on playability over dramatic landscape features. Golfers encounter moderate challenges through subtle undulations and strategically placed bunkers that require an attentive approach around the greens.

The course measures approximately 6,300 yards from the back tees with a par of 72, maintaining a balance suitable for a broad spectrum of golfers. While it does not present the length or complexity of higher-end courses, it offers a reliable platform for players looking to sharpen their short game or enjoy a full round without the pressure of steep difficulty. The fairways are generally forgiving, giving novices opportunities to stay in play, although some inconsistencies with course conditions have been noted, particularly during wetter seasons when drainage creates soft spots.

Amenities at Dead Horse Lake remain modest but functional, with a simple clubhouse housing basic facilities for registration and light refreshments. Players should anticipate walking as the primary mode of transportation; carts are available but not always guaranteed, and the course’s gently rolling terrain keeps walking manageable for most fitness levels.

Signage and course markings could improve, as distance indicators are limited, challenging players’ ability to gauge precise yardages to hazards and greens. This practical aspect suggests visitors prepare accordingly by bringing rangefinders or GPS devices.

Dead Horse Lake is best suited for casual players and local residents seeking an affordable round rather than those chasing championship tests or upscale amenities. The course provides steady golf in a relaxed atmosphere within a short drive from Knoxville. Understanding its straightforward nature and planning for the modest facilities will enhance the overall experience and provide a reliable spot to enjoy golf without unnecessary complexity.

Course Highlights

Dead Horse Lake is defined by open fairways edged with mature trees and subtle elevation changes that introduce a quiet test of accuracy and shot placement. Bunkers, though limited, guard many of the greens, demanding precise approach shots. The course’s straightforward layout focuses on accessible play rather than dramatic architectural flourishes.

Don't even bother making a tee time!! Way offer priced for the experience that you get. If you work and have to go in the evening you always have 2 other groups with you. I have yet to finish a whole 18 holes on this course. The owner has to stop being cheap and get a starter.

We scheduled to play 2 weeks in advanced with family. They placed us in front of a golf league, forced us to skip 2 holes, and we finished 9 holes in under an hour. Would not recommend this course.

No markers to tell how far from the pin you are. Bring reading glasses so you can look at the tiny map on the back of your score card. You're probably better off closing your eyes and hitting the ball than you are guessing where the pin is at when shooting over a hill. No cart girl either. The price to play says everything you need to know about the course.

Always love and enjoy coming to play Dead Horse. Wish that the cart fees were included with the green fees and not separately. I love how the greens are always in fantastic shape no matter what. Wish some of the fairways for winter golf were in more dryer conditions for better drainage system.

Booked a Tee time AND Paid for 18 holes of golf. At the turn, we were told that we couldn’t keep playing and they tried charging us an additional 25$ to continue playing, saying it was “their mistake” that they put us down for 18. When we told him and showed him that we in fact made the tee time for 18 and paid for it, he got very upset and rude so we just went home. They gave us no rain check or discount to make up for the fact that we were conned out of 9 holes even though the course and the pro shop worker admitted that they were in the wrong.
