Pine Oaks Golf Course

Johnson City, Tennessee, USAEast Tennessee

Pine Oaks Golf Course in Johnson City delivers an 18-hole parkland layout framed by mature pines and approachable fairways. Offering a blend of manageable challenges and natural terrain, this public course provides an affordable golf experience suited to all skill levels.

Course Overview

Pine Oaks Golf Course, located in Johnson City, Tennessee, offers an 18-hole layout designed for players seeking a solid, affordable round in a casually natural setting. This public course traces a parkland style, weaving through mature pine trees that define the character of the fairways and frame each hole with a blend of shade and visual challenge. While it does not present the manicured glory of some high-end clubs, Pine Oaks maintains a steady presence as a workhorse course for golfers in the region.

The terrain is moderately varied with a handful of gently rolling elevations, lending a quiet rhythm to the round. Fairways are generally generous, accommodating a wide range of skill levels, though the long rough can be thick and demanding, making accuracy a worthwhile premium. Greens at Pine Oaks offer subtle breaks, providing a fair challenge without overwhelming less experienced putters. Sand bunkers hold well-kept sand and serve as strategic hazards around the greens, requiring thoughtful approaches to score well.

Players can expect a mix of longer par-4s testing driving distance and accuracy, alongside shorter par-3s and a few reachable par-5s. The course’s topography occasionally directs wind through the pines, affecting shot selection and tempo, especially during breezier days. While the course does not boast grand clubhouse amenities, the practical facilities and affordable rates create a welcoming environment for daily play and learning rounds.

Pine Oaks encourages walking, and with its relatively flat profile between holes, a comfortable set of golf shoes is sufficient. The absence of cart congestion often aids pacing, although golfers should be prepared for variability in pace of play depending on group sizes. Experienced rangers monitor flow intermittently, but players are advised to maintain awareness and pace to fully enjoy the experience.

For those in Tennessee seeking an approachable layout that balances gentle challenge with natural surroundings, Pine Oaks Golf Course remains a straightforward, no-frills choice. It suits weekend rounds, practice sessions, and group golf without the pressures or expense of more exclusive venues. The combination of tree-lined fairways, playable greens, and accessible pricing invites golfers to bring their best effort and leave the distractions behind.

Course Highlights

The course is distinguished by its mature pine-lined fairways that influence shot shaping and wind patterns. Bunkers contain well-maintained sand and are positioned to challenge approach shots around the greens. Though modest in presentation, Pine Oaks offers a variety of hole lengths that engage both novice and seasoned players comfortably.

Course is in pretty good shape. Started on front 9 and it took us 1 hour to play 4 holes and NO ranger in sight!! Hole 9 ranger comes up to us and asks us to speed up play. I stated clearly…then you need to address that with the group in front of us!!! We waited and waited on them for the front 9. We skipped the clubhouse to get around them and the ranger had already instructed the group in front of us to speed up a little. We’re playing at a good pace for 2 holes and we had a player that just had that 1 bad hole on the round. I’m sure we’ve all done that!! Lol. Ranger pulls up again and says speed up play… I almost LOST IT!! I’m a very level headed person. I looked at him and said in a stern voice… we’re playing like we always do and golfers are never waiting on us!! Well the group in front of you are on the next tee box. I said ok so we had one bad hole!! WHERE WAS YOU THE WHOLE FRONT 9 WHEN WE WAITED EVERY SINGLE HOLE!!?!? From that moment I couldn’t keep score because I was being pissed. Trust me… don’t care if I ever go back to that place again!!! I understand the speed of play… but before you call us out TWICE… get your ranger out there to make sure EVERYBODY is playing up to speed!!! Pine Oaks will not be getting any more of my money. The Crossing is a much better course anyway. So BYE FELICIA

Course in good condition. Very pretty. But, the course allows people to play in groups as large as six. There are golf courses in the area that would be better suited for such groups that don’t have set tee times or use a ranger… and as this course employs a ranger… it’s very odd they don’t limit group sizes for pace of play purposes.

Pine Oaks? More like Pine Jokes! Idk where to begin. It rained lightly the day before and turned everything into a swamp/river. Not to mention all the cups were filled with nasty water that I refused to finish my putt into. The rough was a mile high and you could only see balls in that kind of grass if you stood within 10 feet of them. Tee boxes were like ashtrays. Pine needles are everywhere on the greens. Overall the course quality was very inconsistent and was virtually impossible to get into a groove. Also saw NOBODY working out on the course the entire day to fix this mess. I’ve been here many times and it never changes so I give up

A great place to play. Challenges each skill level. The bunkers have great sand and the greens are well kept. The rate makes it a great value. Oh.. the scenery.. phenomenal views!

Great affordable golf course. The greens are in great shape and there is a good variety of long and short holes. On some evenings, you can walk 9 after a set time for $10.

I don't understand this at all... I just think they didn't want to have to go get it and put it back
