Oakhurst Country Club

Clayton, California, USAEast Bay

Oakhurst Country Club offers a challenging yet inviting 18-hole course set against the backdrop of Mount Diablo's commanding presence. With recent bunker upgrades and consistently well-maintained greens, this private club combines natural beauty with a deep golfing tradition that rewards strategy and skill.

Course Overview

Oakhurst Country Club offers a quietly captivating golf experience where rolling hills and sweeping views of Mount Diablo lend character to every hole. This private 18-hole layout challenges players with its blend of classic design and natural undulations, providing a course that tests precision and imagination in equal measure. As you move through the fairways, the gentle California breeze carries the scent of wild grasses and fresh earth, while oaks stand watchful along the edges, their weathered branches gently swaying as if urging golfers to focus on the shot ahead.

Originally opened in the early 1960s, Oakhurst has gradually evolved with thoughtful updates, particularly recent bunker renovations aimed at restoring its strategic playability. The course’s greens reward calculated approach shots with smooth, consistent surfaces that encourage confident putting. While the fairways and rough may remind some of municipal conditioning, the meticulous care devoted to the greens elevates Oakhurst beyond the ordinary.

The signature holes highlight the club’s intimate connection with the landscape. The par-4 12th hole pushes players to thread shots around natural tree clusters while a gentle stream whispers its presence nearby, imposing subtle pressure on well-placed approaches. Meanwhile, the closing 18th hole embraces players with panoramic views, its green perched invitingly under the wide California sky, perfect for a finishing birdie or a hard-fought par.

For those seeking a quieter round, weekdays offer serene pace with few players sharing the course, ideal for focused play or improving your short game with the excellent practice areas. The driving range and putting green cater well to warming up or fine-tuning technique before heading out. Though the club moves steadily toward elevating its overall condition, golfers will find the experience rewarding — both in challenge and scenery.

Visitors should plan for comfortable shoes to navigate the varied terrain, especially for walking rounds encouraged here. Bringing a light jacket on early mornings or late afternoons prepares you for shifting coastal temperatures. Membership is by invitation only, so prospective guests should coordinate play through members to enjoy this private club atmosphere. The well-appointed clubhouse opens its doors with warm hospitality, featuring cozy lounges and a bar that echoes the day’s camaraderie among players.

Oakhurst Country Club offers more than golf; it’s a chance to immerse yourself in a landscape shaped by time and care, where every hole invites a moment to breathe in the fresh air, strategize your next move, and appreciate the subtle artistry of a course that balances tradition and renewal. Whether you are sharpening your game or seeking a memorable round, Oakhurst rewards persistence and presence in equal measure.

This is purely a golf course and related facilities review. Being a private course I was expecting the condition to reflect that. The staff in the pro-shop were nice. The driving range and practices areas are pretty good, and the course itself is challenging. There are some nice views and scenery as the course moves through the hills but it certainly needs some work. They’re focused on updating the bunkers at the moment, which is a much needed change. The fairways and rough are like any average municipal but the greens take it up a notch. Fair speed, consistent throughout the course and in good condition. I have a friend that’s a member so I’ve played a few times on a weekday afternoon for $60. Given the course condition I’m not sure the price is justified. However, every time I’ve played we’ve been one of very few people out there, so the pace of play is as good as you could hope for. Overall, I think they’re doing a lot of good work to bring the course back to life, so we’ll see how it shapes up over time. If they get it back to true country club condition, this could be a gem.

Went here for a school function. Soft skill training. The place was nice and has good views. There was a bar there also but didn’t have a chance to check it out. Also there is downstairs too. We were on the main entrance floor. Very fancy .
