Grindstone Neck Golf Course
Grindstone Neck Golf Course is a rugged, links-influenced 9-hole course along Maine’s coastline where firm greens and coastal winds challenge players amid striking ocean views. It’s an authentic golfing experience prized for its natural landscape and approachable yet distinctive play.
Course Overview
Set along the rugged coastline of Winter Harbor, Maine, Grindstone Neck Golf Course offers a golfing experience defined as much by its natural environment as by the layout itself. This intimate, 9-hole public course demands attention not only for its playability but for the dramatic views that unfold with each step. Here, the Atlantic’s influence is felt in every rise and dip of the fairways, producing an undulating terrain that challenges your balance and shot selection. The course bears the character of a classic New England links-style layout, with winds off the water shaping strategy as much as distance and club choice.
Fairways vary between dry, firm patches and pockets of soft, moistened turf, requiring careful management from tee to green. The greens consistently receive praise for their smooth surfaces and true rolls, even when the surrounding landscape shows signs of nature’s harsher hand. Sand bunkers feature coarser, local sand, a distinctive touch that complements the course’s coastal identity. Grindstone Neck does not present the traditional manicured look of many resort courses but offers instead a more rugged, authentic golfing challenge that reveals its charm to those willing to navigate the uneven lies and natural contours.
The course’s setting is a highlight that many players say turns each round into a sensory passage through seaside Maine. From the elevated tees and greens near holes two through four, panoramic views stretch across the Mt. Desert Narrows to Mount Desert Island, while lobster boats move quietly below, enmeshed in a working waterfront scene that contrasts with the deliberate pace golfers must adopt here.
While the course is modest in facilities—a small pro shop and straightforward amenities—the welcoming attitude of the staff and reasonable greens fees make Grindstone Neck an inviting stop for players exploring the region. Walkers will find firm shoes essential, given the hilly terrain and uneven footing. For golfers seeking a scenic round framed by character and natural beauty, Grindstone Neck delivers an honest, memorable experience without the frills.
Course Highlights
Grindstone Neck stands out for its sweeping views over Mt. Desert Narrows, old links-style playing conditions, firm and well-maintained greens, and the distinctive coastal winds that influence shot selection. The course’s modest scale contrasts with the expansive seascapes visible from several holes, particularly holes two through four. Sand bunkers use locally sourced coarse sand, preserving regional character. Pace of play is generally quick, supporting an enjoyable rhythm despite the variable footing and terrain.

Very rough course, walking or riding, there's not a flat spot to be found. Fairways have little grass and more moguls than a ski slope. The greens were in great condition but getting to them was an adventure. There are some nice views but for me just not worth it. Nine holes with cart I paid $54.

We played 9 holes here during August of 2020. There is a drought, so all of the fairways were more like a desert. Unmaintained regardless of the drought. Several holes have wonderful views of the water, but the cart paths and overall state of the greens need some help.

Some of the most scenic golf you will ever play. Fairly unassuming course from when you first pull in and see the first fairway. The pro shop is small and simple, the staff courteous and helpful. Greens fees are reasonable. The views from the #2 green, #3 tee, #3 green, and #4 tee are some of the best in golf, anywhere at any price. You overlook the Mt. Desert narrows and then Mount Desert itself. You can see lobster boats coming and going getting their traps. Honestly, it's pretty hard to not be distracted by the scenery! The course plays well, has a much older feel to it. The fairways can be dry in spots and wet in others. The greens are in very good shape. Sand in the traps is a more coarse type you usually find in New England sand traps. In the half dozen times I've played here, I've never had to wait on any hole. Pace of play is pretty quick, playing 9 as a single took an hour and a half the last time. If you're in the area and you play golf you must give Grindstone Neck a try!

One of the hidden gems in Maine. The greens are always in great shape. Old links golf feel. Some of the best views in Maine. Two of the most beautiful holes I've every played.

An absolute gem of an old school, challenging, shotmaker's golf course that simply exudes traditional golf feel and style. I played it "down" for the round and enjoyed every moment, including the wonderful tee boxes. I loved that it wasn't a perfectly manicured, resort - style course and that it was coastal Maine at its natural, spectacular best. Great layout, breathtaking views, classic clubhouse (and pro shop) and super friendly people. Reminded me again of why I choose to live in Maine.........the way life should be. I will definitely be back.
