Bacon Park Golf Course

Savannah, Georgia, USACoastal Georgia

Bacon Park Golf Course offers public access to a classic 18-hole coastal parkland layout designed by Donald Ross. Though current green conditions require attention, its tree-lined fairways and strategic challenges provide a historic golfing experience in Savannah's unique setting.

Course Overview

Bacon Park Golf Course, located in Savannah, Georgia, stands as a public 18-hole layout with a distinctive place in the region’s golf landscape. Originally designed by renowned architect Donald Ross, this course carries a classic Southern coastal parkland style, offering a blend of tree-lined fairways and natural terrain that reflects the historic roots of early 20th-century golf design. The routing allows players to navigate a course with character, where straightforward tee shots transition into challenging approaches onto tightly guarded greens.

The course’s setting draws from Savannah’s humid subtropical environment, where towering pines and live oaks frame the fairways, and gentle breezes off nearby wetlands occasionally influence club selection. Players will find the layout approachable for a broad range of skill levels, with holes that reward precise shot-making and strategic course management rather than sheer power. The variety in hole lengths encourages thoughtful play, from shorter par-4s that tempt aggressive lines to longer par-5s that test endurance.

While Bacon Park offers an accessible golfing experience, recent conditions highlight the need for maintenance and revitalization, particularly with regard to its greens. Reports from frequent players note challenges in putting surfaces due to wear and inconsistent turf health, affecting the overall pace and quality of play. Conversely, the course’s fairways and natural topography remain intact, offering enough opportunity for enjoyment and practice.

As the city’s only municipal golf course, Bacon Park serves a diverse range of golfers looking for affordable access to a course with rich architectural pedigree. The clubhouse facility provides basic amenities typical of a municipal setting, supporting players with rental equipment and casual dining options. Walking the course is recommended; the terrain is forgiving, and the flat profile makes for an easy trek, though standard golf footwear with good traction is advisable given potential wet conditions common in the area.

Bacon Park requires patience and a willingness to focus on shot execution in less-than-ideal conditions, but its historical connection and coastal parkland layout remain compelling for golfers seeking a public course with character in Savannah. Enhancements to turf care and green conditioning could elevate the experience, restoring vibrancy to a course with clear potential and a dedicated community of players.

I would give this course 1 star but it gets 2 for potential. I enjoyed the layout, easy tee to green walks, tight and protected greens, thoughtful shot shaping tee shots, beautiful trees and homes on the course. However, the condition of this course was atrocious. Donald Ross would be rolling in his grave at the thought of how these greens are kept. It’s a shame to see the only municipal course in Savannah in such terrible shape. The tee boxes, rough, and fairways are not great by any means but the true trouble lies with the greens. Dirt, sand, and lumps of weeds riddle this sacred space crafted by one of the greatest golf designers of all time. A complete failure from every level of leadership here, not just the superintendent. This course needs care and money fast before it dies. I played on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in the spring and the course was empty, I guess the town has taken there business to private clubs instead. Shame, shame, shame. Not mad, just sadness. The town needs to save this course. I hope and pray one day this course can live up to Ross’s vision of southern costal golf. I will be one of the first people to celebrate it’s resurrection.

The environment for the course is unique to the region and the layout isn’t bad but my god the greens are absolutely atrocious. Dead spots everywhere, crab grass, torpedo grass, pretty much everything you don’t want on a green. Not a place to have a serious round but if you just want to mess around then it’s fine I suppose. Staff is incredibly friendly though and the club house is actually not bad at all.

way over priced for what it is. the greens are so poor it’s almost impossible to actually putt. they need to start putting money back into the course. the lady in the office was extremely rude and unprofessional. i will not be returning to this course

The layout is good, but tees and greens are horrible. It has potential to be better. Currently not worth the money to play here. Greens are literally dirt. Bunkers are hard with little sand in them. Not planning to come back.

Worst green conditions you will ever play. 13/18 of the greens look like this. If you want to waste money, go here. Consider them sands in regulation. Only redeeming factor is some of the back 9 fairways are freshly cut. Give the greens keeper a raise 🔥🔥🔥

It was a pretty fun course, greens need work but also seems like they have a great junior program and kids need to play golf!
