Wild Rock Golf Club

Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, USACentral Wisconsin

Wild Rock Golf Club combines rugged canyon landscapes and bold elevation changes into an 18-hole test of strategic golf. This public mountain-style course offers panoramic views and a challenging layout that rewards precision shot-making amid Wisconsin’s distinctive terrain.

Course Overview

Wild Rock Golf Club in Wisconsin Dells offers a striking canvas carved into steep canyons and rugged terrain, presenting a bold departure from traditional Midwest layouts. This 18-hole public course challenges golfers with a mountain-style design where elevation changes dominate every hole, demanding thoughtful club selection and strategy. As you navigate from tee to green, the natural rock formations and panoramic vistas of Wisconsin’s Driftless Area unfold, lending a raw, elemental feel to the entire experience.

The course’s layout is best suited to golfers who appreciate a route sculpted by nature rather than a manicured, flat parkland. Steep inclines and downhill plunges sculpt fairways that alternate between forgiving landing areas and narrow, risk-reward corridors. While the course is approachable for mid- to high-handicap players, the uneven terrain tests stamina and shot-making, rewarding accuracy and patience over sheer power. Walking here is often preferred to fully embrace the landscape’s dramatic contours, though golf carts are available to ease the physical demands.

Wild Rock’s signature holes stand out for their sheer drops and rugged surrounds. Elevated tees frame sweeping views across wooded ridges while greens are often guarded by natural rock outcroppings and strategically placed bunkers that require precision. Weather can impact play significantly, with winds funneling through the canyons and affecting ball flight, emphasizing the need for tactical shot control.

The main clubhouse provides a comfortable retreat featuring dining and lounge options that welcome players post-round. The course’s remote setting limits nearby amenities but contributes to a solitary, immersive round that feels far removed from the bustle of city golf. Wild Rock Golf Club appeals to golfers seeking a memorable Wyoming Dells adventure with a natural, untamed character. While some recent feedback notes variability in course conditions, the layout itself retains undeniable appeal through its dramatic geography and distinctive style.

For those planning a visit, expect a physically engaging round that blends challenge with stunning scenery. Dress for variable weather, consider sturdy footwear for walking, and allow extra time to absorb the course’s unique rhythm. Wild Rock rewards thoughtful play and delivers an encounter with Wisconsin’s less typical golf terrain.

Course Highlights

Wild Rock’s mountain-style routing incorporates dramatic elevation changes and natural rock formations, creating standout holes that test shot accuracy and strategy. The course’s rugged landscape forms natural hazards and scenic overlooks, while winds through the canyons add an additional layer of challenge. The layout is distinct in Wisconsin for its bold use of topography uncommon in Midwest golf.

I’ve always looked forward to playing Wild Rock because of its beautiful design and setting, but unfortunately, the course conditions during my recent round were really disappointing. The fairways were in poor shape — patchy, thin, and not well maintained. Even worse, the greens were bumpy, damaged, and inconsistent, which made putting frustrating and unpredictable. For a course that charges premium rates and carries a strong reputation, I expected much better upkeep. Wild Rock has great potential, but right now it feels neglected. I hope management addresses these issues soon because the layout is truly one of the best in the area. Would love to come back when the conditions reflect the quality the course is known for.

Played Fri June 13th. We make an effort to play Wild Rock a couple times a year (almost 2 hrs way) as we all love this course and have since it first opened. What was different this round was the condition of many of the greens. In terrible shape with splotchy mud areas completely covering some greens. The 1st hole was one of the worst and we were hoping it was just an anomaly. Nope..a bunch of greens also splotchy. When I suggested (after the round at the pro shop) that they might want to just let players know before their round that unfortunately some of the greens were not up to their usual standard, the reply was, "Have you played Sand Valley this year?". Huh?? What does that have to do with your greens? His only response, "it was the weather". Interesting in how we played Trappers Turn the next day (a few miles way and same weather) and the greens were impeccable. Come on Wild Rock, you are better than this. A little PR on the front end of the round would go a long way, as golfers understand things can happen. But to know the quality of the course has suffered right now and just say nothing, not appreciated.

I normally would have rated this a 4-5 star course based in my past experiences but I played this course over this July 4th weekend with a group of buddies and the greens were absolutely horrendous. $125 for 18 holes and the greens were worse than $60 courses in the Madison area. Big bummer as this was our favorite course prior to this visit. Not sure if we will be back after that round.

This was my first time playing the course. The course was amazing! One of my favorites. Was in excellent shape for playing early in the year (4/26). The only reason it’s not 5 stars is because of the starter. He was so rude. We were ahead of pace but one of our carts was froze. It said we were 4 minutes behind after the 3rd hole. It said we were 4 minutes behind before we teed off. It never changed. The other cart in our group said we were 13 minutes ahead but he didn’t look at that cart. We couldn’t even get a word in. He kept yelling saying we have to get going right now and how unacceptable it was. Saying there was an entire hole between us and the group in front of us. He said it was a two some. Not sure if he understands golf but usually two people play faster than 4. We were ahead of pace but he never gave us a chance to explain it was our cart. He yelled at our friends behind us as well but they were right behind us. They couldn’t go anywhere without hitting into us. Our friends ended up finishing 4 holes ahead of the next group. We were making great pace. After the round in the bar we had the group behind us come up to us and say I have no idea what he had against you guys he kept saying he yelled at you. Almost bragging. The guy told us he asked him why he would yell at us when they weren’t waiting on us? He said they didn’t even see us after the first 1 1/2 holes. He was so confused why the starter was so obsessed with yelling at our group. Other than that it was an amazing day and course. Would love to come back. Only hesitant because of how we were treated by the starter. Everyone else was very nice and professional to talk to.

Played the course on Monday July 14th. I’ve played here a dozen times over the years and normally the course is in wonderful condition. Yesterday the greens were in such awful shape that some of them were nearly unplayable. Lumpy, bumpy and dead spots everywhere. It basically ruined the experience of playing what is a beautiful golf course. Tee boxes for the most part were fine, and fairways were nice. New bunkers are fantastic, but with the poor condition of the greens and the price you pay, I unfortunately, can not recommend it.

Unbelievable bad green conditions. Completely mud and sparse grass. The course should be closed.

Like many other reviewers, I think this is a great course but for some reason they employ the rudest people. From the clubhouse staff to the on-course folks. Only the young kids managing the bags & carts are pleasant (but they also get tipped). I've played this course every year for the last 10 summers & it never changes. If it wasn't a great course I would avoid it all together and spend all my golfing time at Trappers Turn.

Beautiful property and nature but in all my years of playing golf all around the US, I have never played greens this poorly conditioned. Charging $130 to play greens in that shape is a disgrace. Weather is not an excuse—when you charge that much money, you should have to equipment to fix issues.

Greens are in horrible condition. Some are all dirt and sand. Some sort of fungus. No mention of this at check in, charged full price.
