Stonehouse Golf Club
Stonehouse Golf Club offers a challenging 18-hole parkland layout featuring large Bentgrass greens and varied terrain. Its mix of strategic holes and natural water features creates a compelling experience for golfers ready to test their course management skills.
Course Overview
Stonehouse Golf Club in Toano, Virginia, presents a demanding yet rewarding 18-hole experience that appeals to committed golfers seeking a thoughtful challenge. This semi-private course stretches over 7,000 yards from the back tees, laying out a parkland design with generous fairways framed by mature hardwoods and natural wetlands. The route alternates between open, maneuverable holes and tighter, visually deceptive layouts where strategic precision is essential.
The course’s topography gently rolls through forested areas and water features, creating variable wind patterns that subtly influence shot selection. Blind tee shots and challenging approaches test course management skills, rewarding players who balance risk and patience. Large Bentgrass greens dominate each hole, presenting subtle breaks and fast, true rolling surfaces that encourage careful putting. While these greens remain the course’s strongest feature, some fairways and teeing grounds have uneven growth and maintenance inconsistencies, which can affect footing and roll.
Stonehouse is approachable across multiple skill levels thanks to its varied tee placements, but it favors players with a keen eye for shot placement rather than brute power alone. The course demands thoughtful play, with the interplay of hazards and green contours heightening tension through every round.
The clubhouse provides a modern hub, with dining options accessible via QR code ordering from the carts, enhancing convenience on warm days, although full beverage service on-course is currently limited. Walking the course is a doable option, and given the terrain, sturdy shoes are recommended to navigate some uneven footing. Golf carts are available but players often enjoy the walk to engage more fully with the landscape.
Stonehouse Golf Club’s combination of length, natural challenges, and demanding greens makes it a noteworthy destination in Central Virginia. For those willing to embrace its quirks and manage its subtle tests, Stonehouse delivers a memorable journey through a course that requires willpower as much as skill.

Was told over the phone it was $70 to play. Get here and it’s $105 because we don’t live in the state. The course hasn’t been mowed in at least 5 days. 4-7in weeds on every tee box and even in some fairways. Fairways are basically rough. I would not play here again. There’s many other courses in the area that are way cheaper and the conditions are premium. For )105 you’d think they could afford to hire someone to cut the grass, which is an essential part of golf course maintenance I thought.

Good layout. Not very well maintained. 4 inch weeds on tee boxes, tee box markers vary between 2 black spheres, 2 black stone markers, one of each and one random rock on a tee box (2nd hole). Clumpy grass in most fairways because they haven't been mowed. This course could be so good if it put more emphasis on playing conditions. Many areas of the course hasn't seen a mower in a week. Solid Bermuda greens, but they were slow, around 8 to 8.5.

Hate to see this course waste its potential. 80% of the greens are awful and as others have stated the tee boxes are something you’d find at a course charging $20 for 18 holes. For over $100 I’d expect much better conditions. At least mow all the tee boxes? Especially for a tournament. The layout itself is a lot of fun however there’s 0 attention to detail.

I’m really surprised with the previous poor reviews. Pros- Bentgrass greens are in great shape and rolling true. - Challenging layout makes you think off the tees, and course management is critical. - Fairways in great shape. Cons- no food/beverage service on a 95° day. Water was available on the course, but no cart service. - Some diseased spots on a few fairways, but they’re obviously working hard to repair them, and the overall conditions of the greens are excellent.

A wonderful course. A variety of tees for varying skill levels all selected to challenge you from tee to green. The fairways (mostly) offer a large landing area but outside of that you'll encounter rough terrain so place your shots well. The yardage chart provides distance to both the green and 150 markers. Make sure you note the aiming sticks(?) are plain white while the 150 yd markers are black and white. There are LOTS of blind shots. The greens are massive but tightly placed and in great condition with some bare spots but the maintenence crew has done well ensuring the bare spots still roll true. The grill offers excellent food choices with an order ahead qr code in the carts. Definitely a course worth playing and I look forward to playing again.

Was expecting more for the $70 9-hole price. Maintenance was just not that great for the entire course. Need to reduce price and or keep up with the course better!
