The Golf Club at Mattaponi Springs

Ruther Glen, Virginia, USACentral Virginia

The Golf Club at Mattaponi Springs offers a compelling 18-hole parkland course featuring rolling fairways framed by pine and hardwood forests. Combining challenging elevation changes with well-conditioned playing surfaces, it caters to a broad range of skill levels in a private, tranquil setting.

Course Overview

The Golf Club at Mattaponi Springs, located in Ruther Glen, Virginia, offers an 18-hole championship layout that balances challenge with natural beauty. Its rolling fairways carve through mature stands of pine and hardwood, creating a landscape that shifts between secluded forest corridors and open vantage points that highlight the area's undulating terrain. This parkland-style course provides consistent conditioning year-round, with fairways and greens kept in remarkable shape during the playing season.

The routing incorporates dramatic elevation changes that affect club selection and shot strategy, making each hole a distinct test. Golfers will notice the variety in design - from tight tree-lined approach shots to generous, yet strategically guarded greens. The bunkers stand as firm sculptural features guarding key scoring areas rather than mere hazards. Water hazards and natural wetlands come into play thoughtfully, rewarding accuracy and course management.

This course embraces players of all skill levels. While the layout can present formidable challenges for low handicappers with its well-placed hazards and fast, true greens, it remains approachable through multiple tee options that help ease the distance for mid and high handicappers. Walking is encouraged thanks to generally moderate elevations and well-maintained cart paths, with the mature tree canopy providing relief from Virginia’s summer heat.

Beyond the course itself, the clubhouse reflects a welcoming atmosphere with attentive staff and a well-appointed pro shop. Recently upgraded golf carts feature modern conveniences such as coolers and strategically relocated staging areas for more efficient departures. In addition to the on-course experience, Mattaponi Springs offers a state-of-the-art indoor golf simulator, allowing members and guests to practice or enjoy world-renowned courses virtually year-round.

Visitors are advised to bring insect repellent during warmer months, as the area's natural pine and wetland environment attracts insects. While the course rewards precision, the peaceful surroundings and absence of nearby residential development create an immersive golf experience, uninterrupted and serene. For those seeking a private Virginia golf enclave with a blend of classic parkland aesthetics and modern amenities, Mattaponi Springs stands as a compelling choice.

Course Highlights

The course’s signature attribute is its dynamic elevation changes, which shape shot selection and strategy throughout the round. Tree-lined fairways contrast with expansive views on higher holes, while bunkers are strategically positioned to challenge approach shots. The facility’s indoor golf simulator is a recent addition, enhancing practice and entertainment options. Mature pine forests and wetlands integrate with the layout, offering both beauty and subtle difficulty.

Always a favorite with my golf group. Fairways and greens are in excellent shape, and the cost is very reasonable. It is an interesting, challenging course.

As a golfer, I can honestly say Mattaponi Springs Golf Club is one of the best courses I’ve ever played. The layout is both challenging and fair, with dramatic elevation changes and stunning views on almost every hole. The fairways are lush and perfectly maintained, and the greens are fast, true, and a real pleasure to putt on. I love that the course feels secluded and peaceful, with no houses or traffic to distract from the game. The staff is always welcoming and professional, and the clubhouse has everything I need, from great food to a well-stocked pro shop. Every round I’ve played here has been memorable, and I always leave looking forward to my next visit. If you’re looking for a top-notch golf experience in Virginia, Mattaponi Springs is a must-play.

I’ve been playing here off and on for a couple of years now, and Mattaponi Springs really does it right! Tonight my husband and I tried out their brand new golf simulator and it was amazing! Garry met us at the bar, carried my clubs in, and got us all set up. We were able to get food and drinks brought right over to us. It’s basically your own private room! There are tons of courses to choose from on the simulator - from Augusta to Sawgrass to our very own Mattaponi. My favorite feature was being able to see a short replay of my ball strike. There was so much valuable information included in this simulator! They’ve also recently moved their carts to a more convenient location for loading and unloading clubs, which was a welcomed surprise my first time back this spring. They also added coolers to the carts and will give you ice at the clubhouse when you purchase drinks! The course is in immaculate shape, and their care truly shows all year round. All of the food I’ve had here has been fresh, hot, and delicious! The staff here are so welcoming, helpful, and friendly! The course is secluded, peaceful, and full of wildlife. We absolutely love coming here and are so grateful that it’s close to home!

Sadly the once great Mattaponi Springs isn't what it used to be, but the prices haven't changed. The only exception is the staff, who are top shelf. Tee to green is patchy with bare spots everywhere. Multiple greens had water pooling. Fringes and rough have been let go. Bunkers mostly need to be played rake and place. The once picturesque 17 par three smells like sewage. Food is overpriced and slow to receive. That isn't the fault of the staff it's a management issue clearing thinking higher prices and under staffing is good business. Just because you charge high green fees and $18 hamburgers doesn't mean you are a high end destination and this is the case here.

Just go! This is a fabulous course and well-maintained. Worth every penny. Here's a couple Pro tips, make sure and pick up your cart in the parking lot before going to the clubhouse. Bring lots of bug spray in case. And if you suffer from allergies, don't come near this place when the pollen starts coming down. This is a beautiful piece of property with a ton of Pine and other trees on it. The facilities were clean neat and well laid out. Service was impeccable and friendly. Carts are new and well-appointed. I found the tee boxes, greens, and yes, even fairways to be an excellent shape. Sand traps, which are usually the worst part of a course or in great shape and well-maintained. We played the course in early May. They have an excellent practice facility and free range balls.

First time playing the course. Drove 2 hours and it did not disappoint. I wish the greens were a little faster and the carts probably need an upgrade but they're still getting a 5 star. Great layout, challenging, well maintained, friendly staff. Would definitely play it again!!
