Country Club of Barre

East Montpelier, Vermont, USACentral Vermont

The Country Club of Barre presents a quietly demanding 18-hole layout shaped by Vermont’s rolling hills, combining careful shot-making with a true sense of place. With varied elevation and receptive greens, this private course appeals to golfers seeking a nuanced, strategic challenge in a tranquil natural setting.

Course Overview

Set amid the rolling landscape of East Montpelier, Vermont, the Country Club of Barre offers an 18-hole golf experience that challenges both precision and strategy. This private course is carved from the region's natural terrain, with a layout that leverages elevation changes to create demanding approaches and rewarding shot selections. Golfers encounter fairways that wind through gently rising hills and greens elevated with subtle tiers, requiring attention to club selection and green reading. The course reveals itself gradually, with each hole offering a fresh test—some tighter and more technical, others open with ample landing zones.

The overall environment is defined by quiet Vermont woodlands and open meadows, allowing occasional glimpses of deer or other local wildlife that move discreetly along the course edges. This serene setting invites concentration while providing a visual connection to the landscape. Conditions tend to be meticulously maintained throughout the season, with receptive, true greens that encourage confident putting without overwhelming speed.

This layout suits golfers who enjoy a thoughtful challenge with the chance to hone all aspects of their game. Elevation shifts and undulating greens ask for both length control and precise short game touch. However, with the addition of forward tees on certain holes, such as 3 and 17, the course is approachable for intermediate players seeking to test their skills without undue frustration.

Amenities at the Country Club of Barre include a classic clubhouse providing a peaceful respite after rounds, along with attentive staff known for maintaining impeccable playing conditions. The absence of cart paths and limited signage suggests that walking the course rewards players with an intimate connection to the terrain—sturdy shoes are advisable for navigating uneven surfaces.

Players preparing for a visit should plan for a route that demands their full attention to both shot execution and course management. When the New England foliage shifts color, the visual aspect of the golf experience deepens, complementing a game grounded in precision and appreciation of the landscape’s subtle complexities.

Course Highlights

The course features a layout that exploits Vermont’s natural elevation changes, combining undulating greens with strategically placed bunkers. Recent addition of forward tees on holes 3 and 17 enhances playability. The course’s woodland and meadow setting provides a quiet, wildlife-rich experience uncommon at many private clubs. Attention to turf quality and green conditioning stands out as a hallmark.

Absolutely wonderful... ⛳️⛳️⛳️🏌‍♂️👍👊... From winding fairways, elevated tee boxes and greens, this was an absolute journey in shot making golf... Undulating greens with multi-tiers, bring your best putter - Wow!!! This is a course where you hone your game, and, if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere... And the wildlife, from deer to bears, etc. - never had a worry. Beautiful scenery... I could play here forever, that good!!! 👍👍👍👍👍

A hidden gem of a course just east of Montpelier. Have played twice. Once in the summer and once in the fall to enjoy the Vermont foliage. Impeccable conditions, with consistent lies through the greens. Elevation changes that are challenging and breathtaking. Wonderful staff and amenities.

An interesting track indeed. Overall, we’ll maintained; greens in good shape, fairways holding up even with lack of rainfall. The holes are challenging and interesting. But here’s the rub and the reason for only 3 stars. It’s terrible for signage, directing golfers to the next hole! And the cart paths would be better taken on with ATV’s! There’s no Ranger, cart service, water or sand for divot repair.

Love this course! A lot of interesting holes. Greens were receptive, true and not too fast. Really appreciate the new forward tees on 3 and 17. 4/17/22 The course is in excellent early season condition. The greens have been rolled and are fast.
