Honky Tonk National Golf

Sparta, Tennessee, USACentral Tennessee

Honky Tonk National Golf in Sparta, Tennessee, delivers a finely maintained 18-hole layout that blends parkland elements with changing elevations. Known for its approachable yet strategic design, it welcomes golfers seeking a thoughtful challenge amid southern foothill scenery.

Course Overview

Honky Tonk National Golf offers a striking golfing experience just outside Sparta, Tennessee, combining meticulously maintained fairways with panoramic views of the surrounding foothills. This 18-hole championship course caters to golfers who appreciate a challenge set against a backdrop that shifts between wide-open vistas and pockets of dense woodland. The layout is a balanced blend of traditional parkland design and subtle elevation changes that test a player’s strategy and shot-making without overwhelming novices.

The course provides a playable challenge for a range of skill levels. Fairways are generous enough to accommodate less accurate drives, but well-placed bunkers and varied green complexes demand precise approaches from mid and low handicappers. The terrain gently rises and falls, encouraging players to trust their club selection while managing tricky wind conditions that often ripple across the higher tees. While the routing takes players through scenic forested stretches as well as open spaces with grassland views, the lack of on-course restrooms or GPS guidance requires thoughtful planning before each round.

Honky Tonk National Golf’s clubhouse serves as the social hub, offering a casual atmosphere where golfers can relax with a meal or drink after their round. Though the dining options have received praise for standout items like sushi and crinkle-cut fries, players should note some inconsistencies in kitchen service. The staff maintains a welcoming environment, emphasizing customer care amid the course’s quiet setting—often providing near-private conditions for early tee times.

The course encourages walking and showcases well-groomed turf year-round, but players should bring appropriate footwear for navigating the gentle but uneven rolling landscape. Carts are available by request but walking is preferred for those seeking a full sensory connection to the terrain’s subtle challenges. Situated about 20 minutes from Sparta proper, the course is a worthy destination for dedicated golfers who prioritize course conditions and a thoughtfully designed test of golf in Tennessee’s scenic landscapes.

Course Highlights

The course features wide, undulating fairways bordered by natural woodland and water hazards that require thoughtful shot placement. Signature holes take advantage of the property’s subtle elevation, offering challenging downhill approaches and visually rewarding vistas. Despite some logistical challenges such as limited on-course facilities, the conditioning and landscape create a compelling test of golf with a distinct Tennessee character.

Great golf course and worth every penny they charge. Grounds crew does a great job with upkeep and the staff was very friendly. I talked to the woman at the pro shop for awhile after my round. I got there at 8am and nobody else teed off until 9am, so I basically had the place to myself. Is it a bit pricey? Yeah. You pay for what you get though and that's a great golf course! I'll be back soon!

We had lunch at the clubhouse prior to golfing. The service was fantastic. We had sushi that was really good. The Mac n Cheese balls were fantastic. The burgers were charred and over cooked but they have the best crinkle fries I’ve had. The golf course is expensive. It was $125 per person and they don’t have any amenities. We golfed on a Saturday afternoon and it felt like we were the only ones on the course. Fairways and greens were in good shape and there is some beautiful views. They also don’t accept any cash. Everything is card only and they charge an automatic 18% gratuity and that includes the drink cart.

Beautifully maintained with amazing views. The routing was a little weird. The 9th hole ended roughly a half mile from the club house, so it was a trek to get any food between 9's, and 18 plays away from the clubhouse. Also no restrooms on the course. No gps or pictures of the holes on the scorecard so it was your best guess as where to play to. I had a skycaddie but it had Riverwatch on it which was the previous name of the course and a different routing, so it was useless to use. The only reason it gets 3 stars is for how well the course is maintained and the views

I’ve played 50 courses in the last 3 years. That being said, there’s no way in hell this course should be the same price as Sequoya National. There’s plenty of good golf in the area, no point over paying for a mediocre course.

Expensive, without much reason to be. $54 for a six pack and not much for selection. Golf is for rich people
