Caledonia Golf & Fish Club

Pawleys Island, South Carolina, USACentral South Carolina

Caledonia Golf & Fish Club offers a distinctive 18-hole challenge featuring a layout that blends strategic complexity with Lowcountry scenery. Known for firm greens, impressive wildlife encounters, and a unique aesthetic touch, this private course demands precision and rewards thoughtful play.

Course Overview

Caledonia Golf & Fish Club offers an immersive experience on a striking 18-hole layout that stands out in the Pawleys Island golf scene. This private course is celebrated not only for its flawless conditioning and architectural nuance but also for its intimate connection to the surrounding Lowcountry landscape. The course weaves through a setting rich with diverse wildlife, including alligators, herons, and turtles, which are part of the ever-present natural rhythm that shapes each round.

Designed by Mike Strantz, Caledonia’s layout demands thoughtful shot-making while providing a diverse range of challenges suited for skilled golfers eager to measure their precision and course management. The fairways are generous yet guarded by trouble spots that encourage strategic placement rather than sheer power. Greens tend to play firm and quick, rewarding players who can maintain a delicate touch around the flag. Bunkers are meticulously maintained, filled with smooth sand, and positioned in ways that often test approach decisions.

The tee boxes, designed with an inventive flair featuring decoy duck markers, add a subtle layer of character unique to Caledonia. It’s clear that artistry runs deeper than the aesthetics; the routing flows naturally, minimizing long walks while preserving the serene feel typical of South Carolina’s coastal lowlands.

Beyond play, amenities include a well-staffed pro shop and a clubhouse that frames the course’s southern charm. Though the club does not offer a driving range, a practice green and chipping areas provide golfers the chance to hone their touch before tackling the full course. Walking is encouraged, supported by carefully maintained paths and manageable distances between holes.

Caledonia rewards those who embrace a game centered on strategy, finesse, and appreciation for the surrounding environment. Whether confronting the subtle breaks of its greens or enjoying the ambient calls of wildlife, players find themselves immersed in a golfing experience that balances rigor with natural beauty, making it a standout destination within the Central South Carolina region.

Course Highlights

Mike Strantz’s first solo project, Caledonia combines a distinctive architectural approach with a natural Lowcountry environment. Its decoy duck tee markers stand out as a whimsical yet practical detail. The course’s strategic bunkering and variety of green complexes require targeted play. Wildlife sightings enhance the sensory experience, while the routing minimizes excessive walking, creating a seamless flow through the landscape.

If you’re down in Myrtle Beach looking to play some golf, do yourself a favor and play here! Easily the best course in the area. From the architecture, to the conditions, to the staff, the whole experience is great! You would be doing yourself a disservice by skipping this gem. They even offer an e-bike instead of the standard golf cart if you’re feeling adventurous. It was an experience I will never forget and I will 100% be back whenever I visit the area again.

Tee boxes are ducks. If you are colorblind, you will struggle with these tee markers at a glance, be sure to check with your playing mates! Course is exceptionally scenic. Plenty to test the avid golfer. Plenty of scenery. Alligators, birds, turtles, herons, and fish can be seen aplenty. Greens play semi firm and quick. Target golf is required with length to score due to tee box setups, and overall yardage. When you think of South Carolina golf, it's not hard to imagine Caledonia.

We had a great time playing the course on January 12, 2025. It’s a great walker’s course, with not too many long walks between holes (although there are a few). The fairways and tee boxes were over seeded but the tips were not for some reason. The greens were nice and rolling around 11-12 and true. The bunkers were in good shape with a good amount of sand. I didn’t get to try any of the food, but what I saw coming out of the kitchen looked really good. The pro shop was nice and the staff was friendly. There’s no driving range, but there’s a practice green and a few flags to chip at. I definitely want to try to get out here again in the spring.

Really nice course with a beautiful layout. Not sharing pictures because everything from the drive into the course until the final approach on 18 should be experienced in person. The course played beautifully, is really well kept, and the greens rolled true. The staff is absolutely wonderful! My only suggestion is to continually raking the bunkers! I know it's probably tough with the summer thunderstorms but a few need better drainage and/or need to be raked more frequently by the crew. Pace was a smidge slow but I'm not going to complain with the beautiful scenery and how enjoyable it was to play this course. Other than that, this is an A+ course.

I love Mike Strantz and from my understanding this was his first solo golf course! I Don't think I'm going out on a limb. when I say in golf course architecture he was an extremist. people tried to temper him down but never really worked! you either loved him or you did not like his courses. I personally absolutely loved it then again, Caledonia was a humbling experience and one of the worst rounds of golf I've had in years can't blame him though even though he made it far more daunting than I would have liked aesthetically. it's an absolutely beautiful golf course. just doesn't suit my game as well as some of his others like bulls Bay or his sister course across the street. true blue which I prefer! that being said, you definitely need to check this one off your list. the conditions are flawless and The teebox markers are decoy ducks. I mean seriously. how cool is that!
