Robert Trent Jones Golf Course
Robert Trent Jones Golf Course in Ithaca presents a classic 18-hole parkland challenge with large, contoured greens and tree-lined fairways. Though the course shows signs of wear in bunker upkeep, it remains a strategic test for golfers who appreciate traditional design and thoughtful shot-making.
Course Overview
Set against the rolling hills near Ithaca, New York, the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course delivers a traditional 18-hole layout rooted deeply in classic parkland style. Designed by the renowned Robert Trent Jones Sr., the course offers a blend of strategic challenge and natural beauty, with generous fairways framed by mature hardwoods and contoured greens that demand precise approach shots. Though the course reflects a timeless design philosophy, current conditions reveal a contrast between the architect’s original vision and present-day maintenance. The fairways maintain a respectable quality, providing a firm yet forgiving surface for players of varying skill levels. Large greens offer ample putting space but require close attention to subtle breaks and slopes, making them a focal point of scoring strategy.
The bunkers punctuate the course at key locations, but several players have noted uneven upkeep and limited sand replenishment, which can affect playability and course strategy. The course’s natural terrain introduces gentle elevation changes and tree-lined corridors that keep navigation both mentally engaging and visually compelling. The setting, located just a short drive from downtown Ithaca, situates golfers in a semi-rural landscape that blends wooded surroundings with open vistas.
Playability tends to favor golfers with patience and thoughtful shot-making rather than outright length or brute force. It welcomes mid to high handicappers for a measured test but retains compelling challenges for low handicaps through well-placed hazards and expansive greens.
Amenities include a modest clubhouse facility focused on serving the university community and affiliated members, though expectations for full-service resort luxuries should be tempered. Practice areas are available, but operational hours and maintenance issues may influence a visitor’s warm-up routine.
For those planning a visit, walking is feasible with appropriate footwear due to generally gentle slopes; golf carts are available but some players prefer walking to better appreciate the course’s nuanced layout. Consider scheduling tee times earlier in the day to avoid limited afternoon range access and to experience the course at its best conditions. This venue carries the weight of history and design pedigree, representing a unique regional golf experience for those willing to embrace its authentic character and occasional imperfections.
Course Highlights
Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., the course features large greens known for their subtle contours, extensive mature tree lines shaping challenging fairways, and a parkland layout that balances strategic shot placement with approachable conditions. Bunkers are prominently placed but require careful navigation due to maintenance variations. The course’s setting just outside Ithaca blends rustic natural beauty with park-like serenity.

Great course and very good staff. Greens are very challenging and in great condition. My only complaint is that the course is not marked well and the bunkers on the back -9 are very poor.

I was very excited to play here, but it was super dissapointing. The tee boxes were in rough shape, sand traps hadn’t been maintained in years, no ball washers, and no sand on the carts to repair divots. The fairways and greens were decent enough, but I expected much more from Cornell’s golf course. Andy Bernard would have been embarrassed by the shape of this course.

I wasn’t necessarily expecting the TPC here, but this was the most unpleasant golf course experience I’ve ever had. We were told the range was open until dark, but we turned up at 6 and the ball dispenser was closed. We practiced some short game, but the green was in rough shape and the sand trap was half flooded and half packed dirt. I had a few range balls in my bag so we decided to hit those when a guy rolled up to tell us the range was closed… at 6:50pm!! I can’t believe that no one wants to play after work. Also, the range is turf and you can’t tee up… no practice on the driver? This was just a bizarre place, not welcoming, and poorly maintained.

Two holes were closed down, not notified before arriving and the majority of sand traps are unplayable. Everything is lifted place. $55 for a walking around is ridiculous here at the current shape of the course.

As a great man once said "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times"! Let's begin with the best, the course is a truly classic design. The layout is beautiful, the greens are among the largest I have ever played in my 50 plus years of play. For the majority of greens they are in excellent condition. Now the not so nice, the bunkers, which are well located each and every one fairway and greeside are in horrible overgrown condition, no sand. They are totally unplayable. Either Cornell is ready to embark on a total reconstruction or they have abandoned them! The Fairways are ok but many areas of burnout. The cost at $ 68 is way out of line with conditions. Our Foursome felt very sad that this course is not cherished by the university, especially in light that Mr. Jones was a graduate AND that Cornell has a world famous turf program. If this course was given the attention and respect it deserves it would truly be a spectacular venue! Please Cornell restore this course to glory!
