Cedars Edge Golf Course

West Branch, Iowa, USACentral Iowa

Cedars Edge Golf Course delivers a straightforward nine-hole golf experience blending natural Iowa terrain with accessible play. Its gently rolling fairways and varied greens provide a testing yet approachable round for casual and local golfers alike.

Course Overview

Cedars Edge Golf Course in West Branch, Iowa, presents a straightforward nine-hole layout that challenges players with its varied terrain and natural Iowa landscape. This public course offers an accessible golfing experience ideal for those seeking to sharpen skills or unwind amid familiar Midwestern surroundings. The layout weaves through gently rolling fairways that demand strategic shot placement, while the greens present subtle breaks requiring careful attention to pace and line.

While the course is compact, its design embraces the region’s natural contours, creating holes that feel distinct despite the limited number. Players will encounter a mix of tight landing areas and short par 3s that highlight precision over length. The course’s topography, however, reflects a work in progress when it comes to maintenance. Fairways tend toward firm and dry conditions during much of the season, which affects ball roll and traction, prompting golfers to adjust their approach. The rough often provides softer ground and a margin for errant shots, though some sections could benefit from enhanced turf management to improve playability.

The clubhouse offers a welcoming environment with attentive staff and a modest array of food and beverage options, making it a suitable place to regroup after a round. While services and groundskeeping indicate areas for growth, Cedars Edge caters well to casual players and locals who appreciate a relaxed pace and an affordable golf outing.

Visitors should bring quality footwear suited for varying ground firmness and expect to adapt to the course’s natural challenges rather than manicured conditions. The course’s friendly staff encourages walkers, enhancing the connection to the landscape as you move between holes. Though hospitality has received mixed reports, those who appreciate authentic regional golf with modest expectations will find value here.

In essence, Cedars Edge offers a modest but honest golf experience rooted in the heart of Iowa's countryside. Its approachable layout suits newcomers and weekend golfers, while those seeking technical challenge can still test their shot-making within the course’s limits. Planning a visit during spring or early fall promises more comfortable playing conditions, making Cedars Edge a practical stop on any Central Iowa golf itinerary.

Course Highlights

We have been to this course twice now and each time we were shown nothing but attitude. The first time we did not have a tee time and when we got there the women in the club house copped an attitude saying she couldn’t get us in for over an hour. So we waited, no problem. While we waited not one other group came and started to golf and there were plenty of carts. Today we went for a second time this time we had a tee time. We got there about 15-20 mins before our tee time and waited for the last of our family to show up. It was about 5 mins before our tee time when I went back in to get a drink for my child. She again copped an attitude and asked why we hadn’t teed off yet. Mind you the last two golfers for our group were paying as I walked in. On hole 7 she rolled up hollering about how 6 of us can’t hold together. Mind you we paid for 5 but after the first hole 1 stopped golfing which is why we were going together. However the group behind us was a group of 5 and one group in front of us was 10. Her response was because they were members. So BEWARE!! If you are not a member you are not shit to them. We will not be coming back!!

Multitude of issues with this course. The second I entered the clubhouse I was greeted with contempt. Almost as if it was irritating to them that I wanted to golf there. I played with two groups of 4 on one of the "play as many as you can" nights. Right from the start I felt unwelcomed. Aside from the unwelcoming I had received, the course itself has decent topography. Each hole is unique and has varying levels of difficulty. My gripe with these holes is the fairways are ALL like playing on volcanic rock. It is obvious that they do not get watered and have crusted into a rocky, bumpy, cavernous wasteland of horrible lies. Every shot my ball was nestled into a giant crater of dried, cracked earth. I would only hope that I miss the fairway on every drive so that I can play on soft ground in the rough. Only to make matters worse, the greens look like they are cut once a week. I had multiple birdie putts robbed by giant blades of grass sticking out of the green rustling my ball away from the cup. It got to the point where I would pay down the green where my line would be in order to avoid the grass messing with my line. Not to mention, this is only a 9-hole course, so the amount of maintenance should not be profoundly difficult. I would avoid this course unless you like being treated like a second class citizen and prefer poorly maintained courses. Overall, the horrible hospitality, and the maintenance of this course is something that I would determine any other course better than this one in the area. Pleasant valley, Brown Deer, Saddleback. Any of these courses are colossally better and better maintained. Will never come back.

Beautiful club house, nice people, golf course is a work in progress but coming along. The greens are tough but fun to play. We ate there and the food was good with varied beer options.

If the fairways were watered this would be one of the best local 9 hole courses around. But I understand that such a system would be an expensive upgrade. Nice staff, nice building, and neat layout.

Course was challenging and fun. Our first golf cart had a faulty parking break. Exchanged it after the first nine holes for a different one, and the second cart's parking break also didn't work.
