Sun Valley, Idaho, USACentral Idaho

Elkhorn Golf Club in Sun Valley, Idaho, presents a mountain-style 18-hole challenge that balances scenic elevation changes with approachable playability. This public course invites golfers of all skill levels to experience varied terrain, thoughtful bunkering, and scenic views framed by pine forests and rugged peaks.

Course Overview

Set against the striking backdrop of Sun Valley’s mountainous terrain, Elkhorn Golf Club challenges and charms golfers seeking a mountain-style experience just beyond Idaho’s premier resort town. This 18-hole public course stretches over approximately 7,000 yards with a par of 72, offering a compelling layout that weaves through open meadows and forested ridges. While the rugged topography shapes strategic shot-making, Elkhorn avoids excessive punishment, making it approachable for a broad range of abilities—from eager beginners to seasoned low handicappers.

The mountain setting influences both scenery and play. Players encounter sweeping vistas framed by towering pines and distant peaks, with fairways that demand precise placement, often influenced by the subtle mountain breezes. Several holes descend gently or climb foothills, incorporating elevation changes that add layered complexity to club selection and shot trajectory. Bunkers are placed thoughtfully to guard greens and challenge approach shots without overwhelming the course’s natural flow.

Elkhorn’s reputation rests not only on its golf but also on the surrounding amenities. The clubhouse offers a casual yet welcoming atmosphere with a dining area known for quality fare, including standout dishes that complement a day on the links. The absence of on-course beverage carts requires players to plan ahead, but walkable routing encourages a connection to the terrain and fresh mountain air. Signage around the club can improve, particularly directing players between holes and to practice facilities, yet the staff’s friendly assistance eases navigation.

For those traveling to Sun Valley, Elkhorn presents an opportunity to engage with the great outdoors while refining various aspects of their game in a hands-on mountain golf environment. The course’s blend of natural elevation, playable bunkering, and consistent greens keeps rounds engaging. Being open to the public, it welcomes visitors looking to experience golf beyond the resort courses with terrain that tests judgment and rewards thoughtful play.

Visitors should prepare for variable mountain weather, bringing layered apparel and sturdy shoes suited to walking uneven footing. Early tee times typically offer the most comfortable conditions and firmer fairways. Whether you seek to escape into the mountains with your clubs or hone skill under changing conditions, Elkhorn Golf Club delivers a practical yet memorable mountain golf experience.

We enjoyed our golf experience. There are some things that need to be changed or dealt with...like signs to a couple holes and their hours. Good closes at 4 or 5 and the clubhouse closes at 5. So weird for a golf course. Our food was amazing though! The burger was juicy and that pasta salad was delish!

A very nice golf course. We played on 5/21/22 with 8 people on a work trip. 6 of our group are below average golfers so we played as a scramble for them. The course was open enough that it was playable for the majority of our group, but also highly recommended by the two of us that are mid to low handicappers. There were some small brown spots in the rough and around tee boxes, but the fairways and greens were in perfect condition (2 weeks before peak season). More signs are needed by the clubhouse to direct players to the driving range and 1st tees, as well as to hole #12. You have to cross the street (no signs to direct you), otherwise you end up at #18. The pro shop was only open from 9am-4pm, and there are no drink carts on the course, or any "to-go" food or snacks at the pro shop or restaurant. It looks like there is a walk up window downstairs but it inside was completely empty so it may only be open during the peak season. I will definitely come and play again and have no reservations recommending the golf course.

Three years later, what a difference. 180 bucks a round, sloppy rude service from the pro shop to the cart barn, no beverage cart, no starter, they haven't had service at the turn for I don't know long now, the kitchen closes at 4..... what happened here folks, everyone I spoke with said that the management is the worst, and I certainly don't doubt it, based on what I experienced. Sun Valley should really be ashamed of how the Elkhorn course and experience have let every local and guest down. Please don't blame supply chain, staffing shortages, or covid... we are all over those excuses. This is just plain poor training, staff and management. You are setting an example of how it should not be done. So sad....

I was in the golf business for 6 years. This is the worst run golf course I’ve ever encountered. The pro was rude. No beverage cart. No water jugs on the course. The pins had not been changed in several days. I would not play this course again for free. $215 for a terrible afternoon. If it weren’t for the beautiful views, this would be a below average muni. I would give them 0 stars if I could. Stay away!

We went to the all you can eat Friday fish and chips at a great price. The fish was outstanding, made with cod filets, not pressed cod meat. The fries were waffle fries piping hot. The atmosphere was special along with the views. Service couldn't have been better. We are locals and this restaurant will be one of only few that we will patronize frequently.
