DeLaveaga Golf Course

Santa Cruz, California, USACentral California Coast

DeLaveaga Golf Course challenges public golfers with a demanding 18-hole layout that weaves through steep hills and forested corridors. Combining mountain terrain with parkland elements, it offers a balanced test of accuracy and strategic shot-making for a memorable round near Santa Cruz.

Course Overview

DeLaveaga Golf Course presents a rigorous yet rewarding experience for golfers venturing through its 18 holes carved into the Santa Cruz foothills. As a public course renowned for its challenging elevation shifts and forested surrounds, it demands thoughtful shot placement and strategic course management. The layout offers a blend of parkland and mountain golf characteristics, with narrow fairways bordered by dense trees and rugged ravines that test accuracy from tee to green.

Playing DeLaveaga is an exercise in navigating natural terrain, where uphill and downhill lies shape club selection and require adjusting your tempo. The back nine heightens the challenge with tighter corridors and more pronounced elevation changes, rewarding players who approach each hole with patience and precise execution. Though the course presents a tough but fair test for low handicappers, its design remains accessible enough for intermediate golfers willing to engage thoughtfully with the landscape.

Golfers will find a well-maintained driving range and functional practice facilities that complement a demanding playing experience. The clubhouse offers a relaxed setting with casual dining options and an open deck that invites reflection on the round amid sweeping views of the surrounding hills. While the course pushes your shot-making skills, it welcomes players seeking a public day of golf that combines physical challenge with refreshing natural beauty.

The course’s character is shaped by the steep slopes, winding fairways, and a variety of natural hazards that create moments of both frustration and thrill. Walkers should prepare for uneven terrain, especially on the tee boxes and sloping greens, with shoes providing firm traction advisable. For visitors planning to play, mornings and late afternoons provide the best light and cooler temperatures, enhancing the sensory rhythm of the hills and woods that define DeLaveaga.

This is a destination where persistence and strategic play reward those ready to contend with a course that does not yield easily but remains engaging thanks to its authentic connection to the landscape and community. DeLaveaga continues to draw players seeking spirited competition, with a genuine test of golf amid iconic Californian scenery.

Course Highlights

The course is distinguished by its significant elevation changes, narrow fairways lined with tall redwoods and oaks, and natural hazards including ravines and forested areas. One of our families favorite places to go on the weekend. We go to the driving range which is family friendly... always greeted with a happy hello from staff. Facilities are well maintained. The restaurant menu is limited, but OK. Really think they need to be a bit more diverse in the menu. The quality of food is great, and open deck seating is nice as well.

Been playing this golf course for 30 years and this is the worst I’ve ever seen it in my life. Terrible Maintenence by probably city workers that can’t get fired. If I was a local, I would demand higher standards out of the guys that turn this Golf Course into a weed field

Greens were nice, fairways were rough in spots. Great staff and driving range

The course was in good shape and we had fun. Only draw back was the tee boxes could have been in better shape.

Don’t get me wrong, I like DeLaveaga. The course is fun and challenging with elevation changes throughout. The back nine is a test of placement with tree lined corridors and narrow fairways. The problem is this course isn’t maintained like it used to be. Crabgrass or dead grass shouldn’t be within range of the tee shot. Fairway bunkers have weeds thriving. This level of neglect shouldn’t be acceptable even for a muni course. DeLaveaga is such a great layout and could be wonderful with more attention from the groundskeeping crew.

This place was a real treat, lots of challenge but still fair. I need to play it again as I now know where not to hit it on every hole 😅. Seriously though the course is in great shape, driving range and putting greens were nice and staff was very helpful. The only thing keeping this from being a 5 were the tee boxes. Every one was quite thrashed and uneven, making driving extra difficult. Which was odd because the rest of the course was in tip-top shape, especially for Novemeber. Please don't let that keep you from visiting though. I will be back for Round 2!

Just a great public golf course… designed to challenge the amateur golfer 🏌️‍♂️ & best undertaken with a keen knowledge that wayward shots will often disappear ( unrecoverable) into the forested-side ravines , hillocks, & other undesirable circumstances… but for those ready to employ some basic course management shots… will love the whole experience!
