Essex Golf Club (Lakeview)
Essex Golf Club (Lakeview) in Hot Springs, Arkansas, challenges players with a water-centric 9-hole layout featuring elevated greens and strategic carries. This public course combines affordability with a test of precision, making it ideal for beginners and those honing their short game.
Course Overview
Essex Golf Club (Lakeview) offers an approachable and water-rich golfing experience for players willing to embrace its unique challenges. This public 9-hole course in Hot Springs, Arkansas, stands out less for manicured perfection and more for its engaging layout that demands strategic shotmaking, particularly around the water hazards that influence play on a majority of the holes. Although shorter than many standard courses, Essex tests golfers with elevated greens and multiple water carries, creating a dynamic environment that few short courses deliver.
The course’s setting takes advantage of available natural features, with water coming into play on seven or eight holes, including hole 7 where water hazards affect the approach twice. This incorporation adds a layer of complexity to the modest yardage, encouraging precision over power. The absence of bunkers shifts the defensive focus squarely onto these aquatic challenges, demanding confident tee shots and careful club selection.
Essex Golf Club’s layout includes two distinct par-3 options on hole 4, providing golfers with a varied short game experience within a single round. The green complexes are generally elevated, which alongside the water hazards, tests approach accuracy and demands a good short game. Despite the course’s playful design elements, its condition varies throughout the year, with best playing surfaces typically found between March and September. Players should adjust expectations accordingly and prepare for uneven putting surfaces on occasion.
This course suits beginners and those looking to refine fundamental skills, especially in shot placement and managing risk near water. Essex offers a friendly staff and affordable rounds around $35 per 18 holes, making it an accessible option for locals or visitors to Hot Springs seeking casual play. Although not a pristine championship venue, its distinctive layout and surrounding water offer an intriguing test for golfers of all skill levels who appreciate a course that emphasizes thought and finesse over sheer length.
For those planning a trip, sturdy footwear is advised due to variable turf conditions and occasional uneven lies. Balls tend to disappear quickly around the water hazards, so carry extras. Morning play in warmer months usually finds the course in better shape, providing the best opportunity to navigate its quirks smoothly.
Essex Golf Club invites golfers who value layout originality and challenge within a compact, water-themed setting. While it may not offer pristine conditioning, it delivers an honest test and plenty of character for those willing to explore it.
Course Highlights
The course is defined by extensive use of water hazards across seven holes and elevated greens that demand precision. Noteworthy is the dual par-3 option on hole 4, offering distinct challenges within a compact layout. While bunkers are absent, water serves as the primary obstacle, shaping each hole’s strategy.

I want to love this golf course. The layout is great. I wonder what happened here?! I have played the course a few times now. It is short but not easy. It is the first course where I have lost my ball in the fairway. The greens are in such bad shape that they would have to be completely redone. The 8th is so bad and eroded that you can actually see how a green is built up. Again, the layout is great, the staff are decent, but the course is in the worst shape of any I have played in 30+ years of playing golf.

Nice people that work there and run the place. Golf course is in poor shape on most days, decent on its best. Awesome 9 hole layout and with some maintenance and money the place would shine. As it stands you’re better off leaving your putter at home and playing closest to the pin. It’s a great place to learn to play golf though just bring plenty of balls. Water plays a factor on 7 of the 10 holes. They have 2 different par 3s to choose from when you get to hole number 4. From March to September the place tends to be in better shape.

The greens were in horrible shape and the fairways not much better but it is a fun course. It is shorter than average but you hit over water on six or seven holes, including one twice, and most or all greens are elevated, making them hard to reach in regulation.

Only place I go in HS anymore, around $35 for 18. Greens are nice, lots of water features, & the staff is very friendly!

You get what you pay for, that's for sure. They don't take tee times, but you don't need one. There's a decent chance you'll lose a ball (or a dozen) in the first 4 holes; there's a LOT of water. No bunkers on the course, but they wouldn't keep them up anyway. It's a fun layout, and I think it would be a great little 9-hole course with some TLC, but as it is now, don't expect much.
