Tall Pines Golf Course

Tuscaloosa, Alabama, USACentral Alabama

Tall Pines Golf Course in Tuscaloosa offers a straightforward 18-hole parkland layout framed by pines and gentle terrain. While maintenance issues have impacted conditions, the course remains a budget-friendly option for casual players and those looking to sharpen their skills in a relaxed, wooded environment.

Course Overview

At Tall Pines Golf Course in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, players can expect a straightforward 18-hole layout rooted more in accessibility than in championship challenge. This public course has a traditional parkland style, with a landscape defined by mature pines that line gently rolling fairways, providing a calming woodland atmosphere rather than dramatic elevation changes or coastal vistas. The terrain is mostly flat with subtle undulations, which caters to golfers seeking an approachable experience without extreme hazards or forced carries.

Tall Pines presents a blend of longer holes and short, punchy par 3s, making it suitable for beginners working on their game as well as casual weekend players. Its fairways are relatively wide, inviting a steady tee shot, though the course’s maintenance has drawn criticism and resulted in an uneven playing surface in recent times. Players should anticipate variable green conditions, as some have reported sandy and patchy putting surfaces that can affect roll and pace.

While the course lacks the manicured finesse and architectural pedigree found at more prominent venues, Tall Pines offers value for those looking to practice and enjoy a budget-friendly round. The clubhouse serves as a simple hub with a pro shop and snack bar, adding convenience for golfers spending a few hours on site. Walking is allowed but given the modest terrain and course condition, players might prefer a cart, especially during warm weather.

The quiet setting, away from heavy urban congestion, allows for a relaxed round without crowds. However, serious golfers or those pursuing a well-maintained, test-of-skill environment may want to consider other options in the Tuscaloosa area. Tall Pines functions best as a place to keep golf in your swing rather than a destination for championship play.

Visitors should plan accordingly, bringing reliable footwear and keeping expectations aligned with the course’s current upkeep. Early morning tee times or weekdays typically provide the most peaceful conditions. For golfers seeking affordable access to fairways framed by pines, Tall Pines holds modest appeal despite its recent challenges.

Course Highlights

Tall Pines features a classic parkland style with tree-lined fairways and subtle elevation changes. The course is defined by its mature pine trees, offering shade and a quiet atmosphere. While maintenance challenges have affected green surfaces, the layout allows for a relaxed round focused on playability rather than technical difficulty.

This is the worst golf course I've ever played. $55 plus tax to play a course that hasn't been mowed in over a month. If that's not bad enough, every green is burnt up and nothing but sand. They claim that the rain has caused them to not be able to mow, but yet every green is burnt up. Literally not even the tee boxes are cut. It's like hitting out of the rough off the tee. Save yourself $60 and don't come here. Looks like on a couple of holes on the back 9 they cut around the tee box, but didn't cut the tee.

Played 9 holes with a 4:45 pm tee time. The charge for green fees and cart fee was $45. No twilight fee special. For the shape this course is in, this was ridiculous. You can’t tell the difference between the fairway, the rough, and the native area. The greens are full of sand and are not cut to length. Some of the most uneven and slowest greens I’ve ever seen. Your ball will bounce across it, not roll. Unless there are some serious improvements, I will not return. Such a shame because there is no other halfway affordable course in town.

This is the course is where golf dies a slow, agonizing death. To call this a golf course is kind a significant stretch. It’s as though someone took 18 flags and chucked them into various locations of a cow pasture. There are now fairways. You can faintly see where a fairway used to be but the rough and fairways blend into one large overgrown field more suitable for sheep than golfers. I booked a threesome for 18 holes and after we teed off on hole one, it was evident that we were in for a very long round. I hit the middle of the fairway and the ball disappeared never to be seen again. It was so bad we quit and requested a refund only to be told there are no refunds. They did tell me that they used to provide rain checks but it wasn’t raining so she couldn’t give me one even if she wanted to. Overall, I would suggest lacing this course with napalm and starting over. Abandon all hope, ye who enter this course.

They definitely need someone that knows how to maintain the course. Greens are in terrible condition. Fairway needs work as well. Pool is nice. It needs a good update and cleaning. Grill is an added benefit but way over priced.

It was a beautiful day and we didn’t see another person on the golf course. Unfortunately we found out why, the greens had more sand on them then some sand traps. Would not recommend unless you are a beginner golfer and want a place to go out and get some swings in. The layout could be nice if they get the course in better shape
