RTJ Golf Trail at Grand National

Opelika, Alabama, USACentral Alabama

RTJ Golf Trail at Grand National in Opelika features 54 holes over three Robert Trent Jones Sr. courses carved into rolling woodlands and lakes. Each layout challenges players with strategic bunkering, varied elevations, and fast greens, offering an authentic test of shot-making for golfers of many skill levels.

Course Overview

Spanning across gently rolling terrain in Opelika, Alabama, the RTJ Golf Trail at Grand National offers a rigorous yet highly rewarding golf experience set within a breathtaking natural landscape. This semi-private complex features 54 holes divided among three distinctive courses, each bearing the unmistakable signature of Robert Trent Jones Sr. Known for crafting layouts that challenge every aspect of a golfer’s skill set, Grand National maintains the classic Jones philosophy of strategic shot-making married with playability.

The courses wind through mature hardwoods, small lakes, and naturally undulating land that tests both accuracy off the tee and precision around the greens. Fairways are generous yet guarded by a strategic mix of bunkers and native rough, while the greens are well-maintained, fast, and true, demanding thoughtful putting throughout the round. The presence of subtle elevation changes ensures a varied rhythm to each hole, while occasional water hazards introduce tactical complexity without overwhelming the player.

While the courses pose a stern challenge to low handicappers, many of the teeing areas and design elements accommodate a broad range of skill levels, making it accessible for intermediate players seeking to sharpen their game. Golfers should prepare for uneven lies in certain areas and bring comfortable shoes suitable for the natural terrain if opting to walk.

Amenities include a full-service clubhouse with dining and pro shop facilities, expert staff, and practice areas that help players fine-tune their swing before stepping onto the course. The on-site restaurant provides a satisfying conclusion to an intense round, with menu options tailored to refuel and relax.

The warm hospitality and the pristine conditions make RTJ Grand National a favorite stop along the Alabama golf trail. Whether tackling the Yellowhammer course or exploring the Hills and Lakes layouts, players are met with a layout that respects tradition while rewarding thoughtful strategy. Preparation, patience, and creativity are rewarded here, making every round an engaging test of golf in a stunning southern setting.

Course Highlights

Robert Trent Jones Sr.'s signature design elements feature prominently, emphasizing strategic bunkering and water hazards that demand precision. The three courses offer contrasting layouts: the Yellowhammer course focuses on elevation and natural hazards, the Hills course challenges with tighter fairways and doglegs, and the Lakes course highlights scenic water features and expansive greens.

Beautiful 54 hole golf village. Courses are all very challenging with all the hills and the greens roll very well. They also give a student discount for Auburn students. Highly recommend

From making reservations to the Starters; everything was first class. My buddies and I tackled each course over two days and it was fun, humbling and a test of your game. We enjoyed the experience of RTJ and will definitely be back. As an additional note the food on property and the servers were outstanding. They even offered some excellent recommendations for dinner options in the Auburn area. Thanks RTJ Grand National for making this a memorable golf outing for me and my buddies.

The course is good especially for the college student discount. The problem is that the starters just sit around and don’t do anything. On the back nine I’ve been waiting 15 min every shot meanwhile every starter I’ve seen is hiding in the woods by the bathrooms

Well designed course. Links course is tuff for any handicap. Greens have been plugged but will come good in a couple of weeks. The staff are great. Bar food and drink are good.

What an awesome course. Best one we played at. We just happened to golf during the Yellowhammer invitational event. The course was immaculate. The greens were smooth and super fast. Beautiful design blending with natural settings. We picked a few courses for our Texas to NC road trip and lucked out this was one of the golf stops we made. Chatgpt suggested a few other places like Birmingham, but somehow I picked this location in Auburn, AL instead. Highly recommend!

Course is fine, policies are awful. If there’s a hint of weather, don’t expect to be playing any golf. No refunds, no full weather check. Great stuff
