Highland Park Golf Course
Highland Park Golf Course in Birmingham delivers an inviting 18-hole experience with a compact, precision-focused layout. Well-maintained and suited for players of varying skill levels, it offers a strategic test just minutes from downtown.
Course Overview
Highland Park Golf Course, located at 3300 Highland Ave in Birmingham, Alabama, offers an 18-hole layout that blends approachable play with a well-maintained urban setting. Stretching just over 5,800 yards from its back tees, this course caters to a broad range of golfers, from beginners to scratch players, thanks to three distinct sets of tees. Its shorter length encourages strategic shot-making rather than sheer power, making it an inviting challenge without overwhelming distance.
The course unfolds through a gently rolling terrain defined by tight fairways and greens guarded by bunkers that demand precision. Its compact layout weaves through mature trees and natural elevation changes, providing a quiet retreat from the city’s bustle while emphasizing accuracy. The putting surfaces are generally smooth and quick, testing green reading skills, though their relative firmness means approach shots need careful distance control.
Highland Park’s maintenance standards reflect those of more exclusive venues, with fairways and greens kept in meticulous condition. This attention to detail enhances the play experience and allows every element of the course to shine. However, the narrow corridors between holes heighten the importance of pace-of-play etiquette, as proximity between groups sometimes leads to crowded conditions.
While golf carts are permitted only on cart paths, walking the course is feasible but requires sturdy footwear and some stamina to manage the gentle hills. The clubhouse offers comfortable facilities and dining options, making it a comfortable place to regroup after a round.
This course is primarily geared toward members but welcomes guests through member sponsorship. Its combination of exacting short-game challenges and manageable yardage makes Highland Park a noteworthy destination for players seeking an urban course that remains true to classic golf principles. Visitors should plan their rounds thoughtfully to avoid peak times when the course is busiest to ensure a more measured and enjoyable pace.
In all, Highland Park Golf Course stands as a solid example of a city course balanced between quality conditioning and accessible playability, offering Birmingham golfers a rewarding test within easy reach of downtown.
Course Highlights
Highland Park’s strength lies in its compact, precision-driven layout that rewards accuracy more than length. Mature tree lines frame narrow fairways, while undulating greens place a premium on short-game skills. The course’s urban setting provides a rare green space within the city, maintained to high standards comparable to private clubs. Though modest in length, the design presents a layered challenge that balances walkability with strategic shot placement.

The upside: very playable course that's shorter than most which offsets the CPO in my opinion. Course was well manicured and maintained given the beating it takes. Greens were pretty quick which can be good or bad. Didn't necessarily hold approach shots well. The downside: it definitely feels rushed. You're always sandwiched in between groups with marshals on patrol. Got hit into a few times. The biggest downside is the price $104. This is not a $100 course. You can drive a few minutes up or down the road and play an equal or better course for $60-80. Overall, not worth the cost. Won't come back unless prices come down or it's a special occasion with friends.

I’m just going to be honest with this review. For the pricing here they will treat you like you are dirt. The old fart starting people at the first tee treats you like he’s paying for your game and drinks. You sir need an attitude check. We are all relatively new golfers with maybe 4-5 rounds under our belt. In my 44 years on this earth I have never been able to tell someone is a miserable soul in such little time. The greens and fairways are beautifully kept but the issue here is that it feels like a speed golf tournament. We get alerted that we are slowing down play for other golfers to the point where we ending up just picking up our balls on 2 of holes because they obviously wanted to rush us out of the fairway. Upon doing that we run right into the back of another group where we discover that everyone is backed up because this place is so money hungry that they stack the tee times so close to each other that it ruins everyone’s play time. I know many people take this seriously but guys let’s try to remember it’s a game where you knock a ball away from you just to chase it down again.

Course is beautiful and well kept (besides the tee boxes). My issue is cart path only for almost $90, spent most of the day hiking up hills... it's less impressive that the course is so well kept being that no carts are allowed to touch the grass. Course is very narrow and everything is very close together, I've never heard so many 'fore's in my life - almost got hit at least 5 times. We got paired with another duo which was fine but everything felt extremely rushed and yet it still took nearly 4 hours to play 9 holes. Better off saving your money unless you're into walking the course.

I have played this course several times over the past few years and it is always in great condition! The staff has always been very professional and helpful with anything I might have needed. The food is outstanding and so is the service. I’ve gone by the course just to have lunch because it’s so good. I definitely recommend trying Highland Park Golf Course on your next golfing adventure. Thanks, Keith
