Course Overview
Woodward Golf Club, located just off Wheel Drive in Bessemer, Alabama, offers a thoughtfully maintained 18-hole layout that balances challenge with accessibility. This public course invites golfers of many levels to experience a well-conditioned track marked by its traditional design elements and steady improvements over recent years. The undulating fairways spread across gently rolling terrain, accented by strategic bunkers and water features that demand both accuracy and tactical thinking. Greens are generally receptive, though subtle contours require a steady putting stroke and careful reading.
Set within a quiet suburban landscape, Woodward Golf Club provides a relaxed atmosphere where players can focus on their game without the distractions of busier venues. The fairways benefit from an upgraded irrigation system installed as part of a recent $750,000 course enhancement effort, ensuring that greens and turf remain in commendable shape even during hotter months. Sand traps have been renovated to better challenge approach shots while maintaining pace of play.
The course’s design leans toward a traditional parkland style, favoring shot shaping and course management over length alone. This makes Woodward approachable for a wide range of golfers—from beginners seeking straightforward fairways to mid-handicappers looking for subtle risk-reward scenarios. The routing encourages walking; however, cart paths can be uneven in spots, so appropriate footwear and patience may enhance the experience.
Amenities include a modest clubhouse with friendly staff and support from an engaged golf professional who provides welcoming service despite occasional scheduling challenges. Weekday green fees offer strong value, often coupled with cart rentals that make the rounds both affordable and enjoyable.
Though not a destination resort course, Woodward Golf Club’s ongoing investment in infrastructure and upkeep positions it as a competitive option for those in the Bessemer area aiming to sharpen their skills or enjoy a casual day outdoors. Its blend of tradition, thoughtful conditioning, and accessible pricing stands out for golfers seeking a quality round without the premium of exclusive clubs.

First time visiting this Course. I read the reviews, and was looking for some clashing. One of the best Course I've played for the price. I heard everyone talked about Jeremy the golf pro, and me being black i was looking for the Bull Crap. Totally opposite. He was very helpful, because running late for our tee times. He said we was good. Definitely will be back. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars, because of the Cart paths.

First time visiting Woodward. Me and my friend were really impressed by the course. A couple of greens were a little worse then the rest but most were really nice. $40 for cart and green fees weekdays can't really be beat. Good value.

The course has greatly improved in the last 2 years. They have invested over $750,000 in the course and infrastructure, including a state of the art irrigation system. They have redone the sand traps and the greens and fairways are great. It’s affordable, challenging and fun to play. The pace of play is also very good.

No problem with Woodward! 31$ for 9 holes walking? For 20$ more could have played 18 holes anywhere with a cart!? It's a no for me! Add it up, that's 62$ to walk 18...

After over a half dozen pleasant visits together (we called the first few times to make certain) me and Biscuit were rudely interrupted in the middle of our round today only to be informed NO DOGS ALLOWED! This person had apparently "never seen us before" and had an axe to grind. He made more of a racket in his cart careening towards us (it as a 90 degree rule which he didn't heed) than the paws on this little mutt could ever make. We decided to end our round and get a refund. We'd always been welcomed by other staff and patrons alike. Until today. Maybe it's more than their dog policy as to why this place is seldom busy? Shame on this "pro". Will never be back with or without the mighty mutt. The Frank House course nearby is a great option and we know we're 100% welcome there.

The course is in pretty good shape. There are some holes that do not drain well on the back nine. The cart paths are in desperate need of being repaired. 16 of the 18 greens were in good shape. Overall a good experience.
