Saranac Lake Golf Club

Lake Placid, New York, USACentral Adirondacks

Saranac Lake Golf Club offers a rugged Adirondack golfing experience with a compact nine-hole layout. Challenging greens and mountain views provide an engaging day on the course for players who appreciate strategic play amid natural terrain.

Course Overview

Saranac Lake Golf Club offers a distinctive experience carved out of the Adirondack foothills, presenting a nine-hole layout that blends classic design with a rugged mountain setting. As one of the few public courses in the Lake Placid region, it provides a refreshing alternative for players seeking a round where strategy and natural terrain converge. The course is characterized by its compact yet cleverly contoured greens, many elevated or tucked behind subtle mounding and sand bunkers that subtly challenge approach shots. While the fairways are often firm and uneven, reflecting the course’s natural drainage and lack of irrigation, this condition adds an authentic, earthy texture to each hole, requiring precision and thoughtful shot placement over brute power.

The course’s location delivers breathtaking views of the surrounding Adirondack peaks, with a crisp mountain breeze that can affect ball flight and clubhouse camaraderie alike. Golfers will appreciate the distinct mountain air, the shifting elevations on several tees, and the playability that invites both the casual player and those comfortable with navigating less manicured, mildly rugged terrain. This is a course that embraces its natural conditions rather than disguises them, highlighting strategic carries, subtle breaks on rolling greens, and occasionally blind shots that test course knowledge and confidence.

The clubhouse staff are known for their welcoming approach, making visiting golfers feel part of the community even on a quick 9-hole round. Amenities are modest but functional, emphasizing authentic Adirondack hospitality. Players walking the course should note the uneven footing and bring shoes suited for rocky, root-laden paths. The absence of irrigation means the course is driest in late summer, so scheduling rounds earlier in the season or after rain can reward those seeking softer conditions.

Despite its challenges, Saranac Lake Golf Club remains a favorite for those who appreciate strategy over smooth lies and the charm of classic design balanced with Adirondack ruggedness. Its unique blend of scenic backdrops and thoughtful design elements makes it a notable destination within the Central Adirondacks for golf enthusiasts who value character and challenge over polish.

Course Highlights

The course showcases hand-watered, contoured greens often situated on elevated plates or tucked behind sand bunkers. Its unique Adirondack mountain setting introduces natural undulations and occasional blind shots. Despite a lack of irrigation keeping fairways firm and challenging, the strategic design highlights precision and course management. Friendly clubhouse staff enhance the welcoming atmosphere.

Scenic course with beautiful views. The club house staff are professional and polite. The greens are very well kept for a public course. Challenging holes with a good mix of near and far. Slight water problems and dry ground, but it does not affect your game substantially. Great course for a quick 9 after work.

Played this morning, 8/1/23. Had a great time. Is it dry in places? Sure. Is it rocky, rooty, with ups and downs all over? Sure. But what do you expect from an Adirondack course? There are 9 fun holes with gorgeous views and that distinct mountain air. What else do you need?

Beggars can’t be choosers. Not a great course but it’s the only one in town. The greens are really nice and it’s a fun course. The holes are close together and some of them are pretty tricky as there are lots of holes. Not too much water or sand. The view at the course is also beautiful with the mountains in the background. Best note is that the staff is super nice and friendly.

Top tier greens. It is a really unique and cool course design (lots of elevated or tucked away greens with tricky reads)… The fairways are a little rough, but this is perfect for a laid back, scenic, and tactically captivating round of golf. Couldn’t recommend more.

An early 1900s architectural gem. Green complexes are fabulous. Sharp fall-offs to grass or sand bunkers. Greens, for the most part, have lots of movement - including sections that slope significantly away from the direction of play. On holes 1-8 fairways are contoured such that a ball “hit down the middle” may end up in rough because of hard and fast fairways. This can result in blind shots to the pin. There’s at least one blind tee shot on a shortish par 4 with a small creek in front. The only clunker is #9 - a short par 4, completely flat. Fairway is wide, tee shot has no strategy whatsoever. Green is a flat unremarkable saucer. I’d bet a large sum this hole is not part of the original layout. It’s sorely out of place compared to the other eight. Just bust through it and get back to #1, a fun short par 5. The biggest knock against the course is that it has no irrigation. The fairways are in really tough shape. I mean really tough. Large patches of sand/dirt, crab grass, and channeling/erosion where rainwater runs off because there’s no grass root system or drainage/drain tile to keep this from happening. I’m sure this turns a lot of folks off who are accustomed to well-manicured fairways. I was told by the manager the club is selling a 100-acre parcel across the road to fund an irrigation system and better drainage. I’d also spend $$ to dig up #9. It’s worth mentioning the greens, all hand-watered, were in really good shape. Club house staff are super friendly and accommodating. I brought my (well-behaved) dog with me on the course. “Just pick up her poop” was the only rule. If you are a fan of classic golf architecture (Raynor, MacDonald), I would definitely recommend SLGC. Play winter rules throughout and enjoy the course.
