Southern Hills Golf Course

Hot Springs, South Dakota, USABlack Hills

Southern Hills Golf Course offers a striking 18-hole public layout in the Black Hills, where approachable front nine holes contrast with a rugged, strategically demanding back nine. Firm greens, tight fairways, and varied elevation make each round a thoughtful test of skill.

Course Overview

Southern Hills Golf Course in Hot Springs, South Dakota, is a challenging and well-maintained 18-hole public layout that offers a dynamic golf experience for players of all skill levels. The course combines traditional and wild elements, separated distinctly by its front and back nines. The front nine introduces golfers to a more familiar, forgiving design with gentle elevation changes and fairways that invite shot shaping with fades and draws. This section encourages strategic play, rewarding those who take advantage of multiple lines to the green, but without overwhelming less experienced players.

The back nine, by contrast, reveals a dramatic shift. Here, the course opens up into a rugged landscape, where elevation plays a commanding role and wild, untamed natural features come into view. This progression tests precision and creativity as hazards lurk beyond well-placed bunkers and smaller greens demand careful approach shots and savvy putting. The terrain shapes each hole differently, presenting risk-reward scenarios that keep the round engaging from start to finish.

Greens at Southern Hills are notably firm and true, rolling with subtle contours that challenge reading skills and putter control. Fairways are relatively tight, and the presence of elevation changes means golfers must carefully consider club selection, often finding that hybrid or long irons produce better results than drivers on some holes. The course's dual personality ensures both novices and low handicappers find moments of enjoyment and difficulty alike.

The staff at Southern Hills is praised for their warmth and helpfulness, creating a welcoming environment amid the scenic surroundings where deer sightings are not uncommon. The clubhouse serves as a comfortable gathering point after a round, with sufficient amenities for players looking to relax and reflect on their day.

Though a few areas such as cart paths and tee box leveling could see improvement, Southern Hills stands out as a scenic, thoughtfully cared-for gem in the Black Hills region. Players seeking a blend of approachability and challenge will find this course rewarding, especially when playing from the blue tees where the course truly reveals its strategic depth and sweeping vistas.

Course Highlights

The front nine provides a traditional golf experience marked by sweeping fairways and gentle elevation shifts, while the back nine unleashes a rugged terrain that challenges golfers with tighter landing areas and elevated greens. Noteworthy are the firm, contoured greens and well-maintained fairways, alongside natural wildlife sightings that add to the setting's charm. The course’s staff is recognized for their friendly and helpful service, contributing to an enjoyable round throughout.

First time playing this course and first time playing “up North” this year. It’s always difficult switching from “thicker” Arizona greens to northern greens and this course was a somewhat expected shock! The staff was very welcoming and took the time to explain the course layout since it was our first visit. Some of the hole to hole transitions are confusing indeed! We found really nice, fast, contoured greens that got the best of us. Overall a really well maintained course, but it does have multiple personalities! The predictable traditional layout of the front nine lulled us into comfort and the out of this world back nine made us realize what a challenging course can be like! No way both nines were designed by the same person! All in all, a great day out. Well done Southern Hills staff!

Course is phenomenal, so much fun. The rating is 2 stars due to Jill the manager, extremely rude and un-professional. She will definitely be a detriment to this golf course..

This is the best, well-cared for public course dollar/fun per yard. The front nine takes you through a challenging yet forgiving need for fades and draws. It advances every skill level with options to cut for a 150yd iron shot or to play it safe with the hybrid fairway. The elevation changes provides players with high five opportunities going around and over hills. The back nine feels like the course designer went off leash. The opportunities to be alone out in the wild teeing off into unforgiving yet playful landscape is of a dream. Taking risks on shots are rewarded though trouble if not strategic. Don’t skimp on reading the greens - a lot to roll with here. To add to the course, Sony + Jill (sp), among other team members such as Jay cutting the greens, are some of the friendliest staff. Club members such as Wally, Ron, Steve, Tom, + others are some genuine folk who care about this track. This is a well run, well taken care of golf course for the city of Hot Springs. 10/10, highly recommend. Can’t wait to run it back next year. Tip: If you can, play from the blues; some of the best tee shots are there.

Spent the week in the Black Hills and looked for courses to play in the area and this.one looked the.most scenic, it was! Even saw a few deer during.my round. Price was a little high but course was in great condition. Greens were firm but receptive, rolled true and not too fast. Fairways are tight, greens are small. Some tee boxes could be fixed (leveled), cart paths need some work. Would have liked a more detailed scorecard, yardage to bunkers or landing areas would be helpful for first time visitors. Found myself teeing off with my 3 & 5 woods, my driver would go through the fairway even when I was cutting the corner. Other than that I enjoyed my round at Southern Hills.
