The Village Course at Waikōloa

Waikoloa Village, Hawaii, USABig Island

The Village Course at Waikōloa offers an 18-hole public layout blending verdant parkland design with striking volcanic views. Known for its approachable playability and unique rock bunkers, it welcomes golfers seeking a reliable yet distinct Big Island experience.

Course Overview

Located on the dry, sunlit slopes of Hawaiʻi’s Big Island, The Village Course at Waikōloa offers an 18-hole experience that uniquely blends Hawaiian spirit with day-to-day playability. This public course, situated in Waikoloa Village, Hawaii, sketches its fairways across a landscape marked by volcanic formations and panoramic mountain views. The layout is an inviting parkland style with a subtle island character, where the gentle undulations of the terrain complement expansive greens and strategic bunkering.

From the first tee, golfers are greeted by wide fairways that encourage freedom in shot selection, a welcoming trait for players of all skill levels. At the same time, the course reserves enough subtle challenges for more skilled golfers, where shots must be carefully placed to avoid dry, rocky bunkers scattered throughout the course. The distinct use of small volcanic rocks in bunkers and even on greens offers a playing surface unlike many others, requiring a measured approach on putts and chips.

The Village Course’s setting enhances the round in quiet, understated ways. Views of distant volcanoes frame much of the course, lending an element of island majesty without overpowering the focus on play. The breezes that roll in from the Pacific occasionally test timing and shot control, particularly in the afternoon when wind speeds pick up, adding a welcome layer of tactical interest.

Amenities include a well-managed pro shop, equipment rentals, and on-course beverage services that maintain comfort during play under the Hawaiian sun. The course is known for approachable pricing and a friendly staff, making it a favored destination for locals and visitors alike. Walking is encouraged, with mostly gentle slopes and well-maintained paths, though sturdy golf shoes are advisable due to the volcanic terrain.

For those exploring golf on the Big Island, The Village Course at Waikōloa presents a balanced challenge within a vibrant natural setting, one where reliability in conditioning and approachable design come together to serve a diverse range of golfers from novices to seasoned players.

Course Highlights

The Village Course stands out for its use of volcanic rock in bunkers and on putting surfaces, creating a playing nuance that influences shot strategy. The layout features broad fairways allowing golfers to experiment with shot shapes while defending well-placed greens that demand precision. Panoramic views of distant volcanoes provide a dramatic backdrop that evolves with changing light and weather.

Absolutely excellent service! Chase in the pro shop went over and above all expectations and made our daily visits to the golf course, the best ever! Baron had our bags loaded before we even checked in, cooler full of ice & fresh fruit to boot! I would recommend the course to anyone visiting the area. Very windy course but well maintained! Thanks Chase for the laughs and your outstanding professionalism, there needs to be more people like you out there! Hopefully my wing heals soon LOL hopefully you make it to Canada one of these days :-)

Came with my fiancé, aunt, and uncle while visiting home from Texas and drove from Ka’ū for a 10:30am t-time today. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly and made sure we had everything we needed for a successful day on the course. The rental process for clubs / cart went smoothly, and pricing for the green fees, extra riders, club rentals were very reasonable. We all had a blast (even us girls who were just here to tag along), but I cannot stress how great all the employees were to us. On an island surrounded by many many golf courses to choose from, its safe to say that we’ll make the 2.5 hour drive back out here the next time we visit home.

Had a fantastic time golfing this course. The views were completely different than I expected. Incredible Mountain View’s with almost every hole looking at a volcano. It’s the cheapest I found in the area, but the fairways, greens, and tees were in incredible shape.

I gave this beautiful course 4 stars. Tee boxes 5 stars, fairways 5 stars, nice manicured rough area we found just about every ball that was hit into the rough. Scenic and foliage was beautiful. NOW, the bunkers are not sand they are small rocks/pebbles not sure of the logic but those same rocks/pebbles are all over the greens which absolutely affects your long putts and your short putts makes no sense when the goal is to put the ball in the small holes. But, overall we had fun. And we will come again. Staff was very friendly and very helpful. Thank you .
