Saranac Lake Golf Club

Lake Placid, New York, USAAdirondacks

Saranac Lake Golf Club is a rugged 9-hole public course in Lake Placid, NY, blending classic early 1900s design with Adirondack mountain vistas. Its natural terrain, challenging greens, and strategic elevation changes provide a distinct golfing experience for players seeking authenticity and variety.

Course Overview

Saranac Lake Golf Club in Lake Placid, New York, presents an authentic Adirondack golfing experience shaped by early 20th-century design principles. This 9-hole layout weaves through a rugged landscape marked by natural undulations, rock outcroppings, and a variety of elevation changes that invite a strategic approach from tee to green. The course’s routing maximizes the surrounding mountain scenery, offering panoramic views that blend with the crisp mountain air, enhancing every shot without distracting from the challenge.

The course is public and embraces a straightforward yet captivating style that reflects its natural setting rather than pristine manicuring. Fairways can be uneven and firm, creating unpredictable bounces that reward thoughtful shot placement more than brute force. Players should anticipate tricky lies among pockets of crabgrass and sandy patches, as irrigation remains a work in progress. These elements impart a rugged charm but require adaptability, especially during drier stretches.

Greens stand as the true highlight — hand-watered and carefully maintained, they present subtle breaks and sharp fall-offs that make precise putting essential. Some greens are elevated or guarded by bunkers and slopes that demand respect, while others require delicate reads to negotiate their movements away from the hole. Though the short 9th hole contrasts with the rest by offering a flatter, more straightforward design, the preceding eight holes offer a rewarding test blending strategy and shot-making.

This course suits players who appreciate classic architecture with a nod to natural terrain and are comfortable with variable conditions underfoot. Its playability appeals to a broad range of golfers, from adventurous novices seeking memorable elevation shifts to experienced players chasing the nuances of vintage golf style. The clubhouse staff complement the experience with a friendly, accommodating approach, reinforcing the welcoming atmosphere of this Adirondack gem.

Walking is encouraged to fully absorb the environment and subtle course features. Those planning a visit should wear sturdy footwear to navigate the uneven terrain safely. Saranac Lake Golf Club offers a refreshing alternative to heavily manicured courses, inviting golfers to engage with a layout that challenges creativity and adaptability amid a striking mountain backdrop.

Top tier greens. It is a really unique and cool course design (lots of elevated or tucked away greens with tricky reads)… The fairways are a little rough, but this is perfect for a laid back, scenic, and tactically captivating round of golf. Couldn’t recommend more.

Scenic course with beautiful views. The club house staff are professional and polite. The greens are very well kept for a public course. Challenging holes with a good mix of near and far. Slight water problems and dry ground, but it does not affect your game substantially. Great course for a quick 9 after work.

Played this morning, 8/1/23. Had a great time. Is it dry in places? Sure. Is it rocky, rooty, with ups and downs all over? Sure. But what do you expect from an Adirondack course? There are 9 fun holes with gorgeous views and that distinct mountain air. What else do you need?

Beggars can’t be choosers. Not a great course but it’s the only one in town. The greens are really nice and it’s a fun course. The holes are close together and some of them are pretty tricky as there are lots of holes. Not too much water or sand. The view at the course is also beautiful with the mountains in the background. Best note is that the staff is super nice and friendly.

An early 1900s architectural gem. Green complexes are fabulous. Sharp fall-offs to grass or sand bunkers. Greens, for the most part, have lots of movement - including sections that slope significantly away from the direction of play. On holes 1-8 fairways are contoured such that a ball “hit down the middle” may end up in rough because of hard and fast fairways. This can result in blind shots to the pin. There’s at least one blind tee shot on a shortish par 4 with a small creek in front. The only clunker is #9 - a short par 4, completely flat. Fairway is wide, tee shot has no strategy whatsoever. Green is a flat unremarkable saucer. I’d bet a large sum this hole is not part of the original layout. It’s sorely out of place compared to the other eight. Just bust through it and get back to #1, a fun short par 5. The biggest knock against the course is that it has no irrigation. The fairways are in really tough shape. I mean really tough. Large patches of sand/dirt, crab grass, and channeling/erosion where rainwater runs off because there’s no grass root system or drainage/drain tile to keep this from happening. I’m sure this turns a lot of folks off who are accustomed to well-manicured fairways. I was told by the manager the club is selling a 100-acre parcel across the road to fund an irrigation system and better drainage. I’d also spend $$ to dig up #9. It’s worth mentioning the greens, all hand-watered, were in really good shape. Club house staff are super friendly and accommodating. I brought my (well-behaved) dog with me on the course. “Just pick up her poop” was the only rule. If you are a fan of classic golf architecture (Raynor, MacDonald), I would definitely recommend SLGC. Play winter rules throughout and enjoy the course.
