Craig Wood Golf & Country Club

Lake Placid, New York, USAAdirondacks

Craig Wood Golf & Country Club combines Adirondack ruggedness with strategic 18-hole play near Lake Placid. Its rolling terrain, challenging greens, and approachable design offer both beauty and test for players of varying skill.

Course Overview

Craig Wood Golf & Country Club offers a distinct blend of Adirondack charm and competitive golf, set just outside the iconic ski town of Lake Placid, New York. This 18-hole, private course unfolds through a rugged landscape that challenges golfers with its uneven terrain and shifting elevations. The layout moves from comparatively open fairways on the front nine to tighter, more wooded holes on the back nine, rewarding precision as the round progresses. The land’s natural topography shapes every shot, demanding strategic play especially around the course’s notably undulating greens.

The course plays to a par 72 and stretches approximately 6,600 yards, providing a firm test that still welcomes golfers across skill levels. While the rough proves notably thick and unforgiving, the fairways are well maintained, giving players a fair target off the tee. Greens roll true but present considerable subtleties and breaks that require keen attention, especially for downhill chips and putts. The undulated putting surfaces are a defining challenge here and serve as a critical skill filter.

Offering a distinctly Adirondack atmosphere, the club’s rustic feel is enhanced by limited smooth cart paths and bumpy terrain that invite walkers to engage fully with the course’s natural character. Carts are available and in good condition for those preferring to conserve energy. The clubhouse provides a warm, welcoming environment with a well-stocked pro shop and a restaurant praised for its hearty fare, ideal for regrouping after a round.

Visitors appreciate the friendly staff and the affordable price point relative to other courses in the Lake Placid area. Local knowledge benefits newcomers as the course’s subtle complexities aren’t always apparent on a first visit. Pace of play can sometimes slow due to popularity, so an early tee time is recommended to enjoy the round at a comfortable rhythm.

For players seeking a scenic, thoughtfully maintained course with a solid mix of challenge and enjoyment, Craig Wood Golf & Country Club delivers an experience that honors its Adirondack setting while providing practical playability for a wide range of golfers.

Course Highlights

The course is known for its hilly, Adirondack-style topography that produces dynamic elevation changes throughout. Its undulating greens create a challenging putting environment, requiring careful reading and touch. The front nine features more open, forgiving holes that contrast with the back nine's tighter, tree-lined fairways. The rough is dense and demanding, underscoring the need for accuracy off the tee.

Course is in nice shape, greens rolled well and the fairways had good grass in them. The rough was a bear, very tall and extremely thick. Great track for the $ , walkable for the healthiest of golfers or a cart is a nice for the rest.

Very very scenic, what a beautiful location. Was almost empty Sunday at 1:00, so was able to play alone at whatever pace I would have liked. Greens were fairly slow but rolled true, and with significant undulations, making them pretty challenging. Rough was thick and difficult in spots. Could use some better course marking regarding which side of each hole carts should stay and where the next tee is. Very bumpy terrain everywhere and with few smooth cart paths, but this added to the rustic ADK feeling in my opinion. Really enjoyed the afternoon playing here.

Excellent course and the people are so friendly and accommodating. Great views and challenging greens. They obviously care about maintenance and keep everything pristine. Prices are affordable with carts that actually are in great shape.

Craig Wood is a very scenic and challenging golf course near Lake Placid, NY. The conditions at the course are very good, especially the greens. It is also one of the more affordable courses in the Lake Placid area. The course was named after Masters and US Open winner Craig Wood. If you're playing it for the first time, it is pretty clear that local knowledge is necessary as the greens are hilly and have some speed. It is definitely hard to chip and putt downhill at this course. For course design, the front nine is fairly wide open and the back nine is a little bit tighter. The staff is friendly and they have a well stocked pro shop. The restaurant is also pretty good. Pace of play can be an issue at this course as many people play it. Course should work on improving pace of play as much as possible.
