Simien Mountains National Park

Spectacular Highlands of Simien Mountains National Park

Simien Mountains National Park, located near Debark in Ethiopia’s North Gondar region, stands as one of Africa’s most striking natural landscapes. Home to the continent’s fourth highest peak, Ras Dashen, towering at 4,550 meters, this park offers dramatic cliffs, deep valleys, and expansive plateaus shaped by ancient volcanic activity. This rugged environment is particularly notable for harboring rare wildlife, including the endangered walia ibex and large troops of gelada baboons—the only primates that are primarily grass-eaters.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978, the park protects a unique ecosystem in Ethiopia’s highlands, providing critical habitat for species found nowhere else. The sheer cliffs and escarpments create breathtaking viewpoints and challenging trails for visitors, combining natural beauty with ecological significance.

Visitors often highlight the Geech camp area where dramatic sunsets light up the cliffs while gelada baboons gather nearby, creating a memorable wildlife encounter. The park’s remote location means accommodations are simple and rustic, with basic community campsites that offer a raw experience close to nature. These conditions emphasize a need for good preparation and realistic expectations about infrastructure.

Beyond its natural wonders, the park offers a glimpse of local culture in the surrounding villages of the Simien highlands, showcasing the close relationship between people and this wild landscape. Whether your interest is rugged hiking, wildlife observation, or scenic photography, Simien Mountains National Park delivers a one-of-a-kind setting that stands apart in Ethiopia and across Africa.
