Hlane Royal National Park is a premier wildlife destination located near the town of Simunye in Eswatini’s eastern lowveld. Covering roughly 30,000 hectares, this park protects important natural habitats of the dry savannah and acacia woodland native to the region. It is one of Eswatini’s largest protected areas and a standout destination due to its commitment to conserving some of southern Africa’s most iconic and endangered species. Visitors here witness the impressive presence of greater kudu, white rhino, African elephants, and even lions, which live in secured sections requiring guided visits.
Hlane’s landscapes include expansive grasslands, scattered thorny bushveld, and several quiet waterholes where wildlife often gather, providing excellent safari viewing opportunities. These water sources support a remarkable variety of birds, with over 350 documented species in the park, from kingfishers to fish eagles. Established in the 1960s to safeguard threatened species, the park holds cultural significance as a royal hunting ground in the past, enhancing its rich heritage among local communities.
The park’s layout makes game drives the most effective way to spot large mammals, while walking safaris offer insight into native plants and animal behavior under experienced guides. Although the park is relatively small compared to neighboring countries’ reserves, its close wildlife encounters and peaceful atmosphere make it a unique experience in Eswatini’s scenic Lowveld. Visitors can also enjoy basic accommodation options and camping areas shaded by mature trees, complete with essential amenities.
Hlane provides a genuine taste of African wildlife, balancing conservation with accessibility for those seeking thrilling encounters with the continent’s famous animals.
