Whiskeytown Falls is a thrilling natural highlight in Northern California’s Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, near the city of Redding. This spectacular waterfall plummets approximately 220 feet over three distinct tiers, creating one of the region’s most impressive cascades. Unlike many popular landmarks that have long been publicized, Whiskeytown Falls was only reopened to visitors in 2006 after being hidden for decades, offering a truly fresh discovery for outdoor lovers.
The falls are surrounded by dense forest, rugged rocky outcrops, and a variety of plant life including ferns, wildflowers, and mosses that thrive in the cool, moist environment. The waterfall’s multi-level drop makes for varied and stunning viewing angles, with mist often filling the air and cooling visitors on warm days. The waterfall’s clear pool at the base is shaded—tempting for a brief rest after the hike.
The hike to Whiskeytown Falls is a defining feature of the visit. At around 3.4 miles round trip, the trail climbs steadily for about 700 feet in elevation, offering benches to catch your breath along the way. Portions of the trail have been affected by erosion, making some parts challenging, but the effort is rewarded with spectacular views and the peaceful sound of flowing water. Safety caution is advised on some tricky spots, especially for those with balance concerns.
Whiskeytown Falls combines dramatic natural elements and a standout hiking challenge, making it a memorable destination for those who appreciate both the beauty and the adventure of the outdoors. A camera comes highly recommended to capture the vivid scenery and dynamic waterfall scenes.
