Scenic Drive at The Hogback near Boulder, Utah
The Hogback is a thrilling and unforgettable stretch of road winding through the Boulder region of southern Utah, noted for its dramatic geography and stunning views. Situated between the expansive Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument and the dense Dixie National Forest, this narrow ridge road is one of the most notable scenic drives in the United States. The highway sweeps along a slender spine of rock known as The Hogback, perched high above two deep box canyons. This raised ridge offers panoramic sights of steep cliffs, rugged badlands, and vibrant desert flora, making it a unique and visually striking landmark in the area.
Travelers on The Hogback enjoy a thrilling ride with steep drop-offs to either side. The route’s engineering challenges are evident as it clings tightly to the ridge, with minimal guardrails adding an adventurous edge. From viewpoints along the drive, visitors can see Calf Creek flowing through lush green cottonwoods, capped by both Upper and Lower Calf Creek Falls. These white and red sandstone formations stretching into the distance form a stunning contrast against the bright blue sky and surrounding wilderness. The surrounding terrain is a mix of rock, desert vegetation, and broad vistas connecting the Henry Mountains in the east to Navajo Mountain far south near the Arizona border.
Historic Boulder lies just minutes from The Hogback, a former frontier town accessible by mule in the past. Visitors can sense the region’s rich pioneer past, with old farmstead remains scattered across the landscape. This combination of breathtaking views, geological drama, and cultural history makes The Hogback a memorable destination for those traveling through Utah’s wild southern lands.
