Sky Lake WMA Boardwalk: A Window Into Mississippi’s Ancient Swamps

Located near Belzoni in the heart of the Mississippi Delta, Sky Lake Wildlife Management Area Boardwalk offers a rare glimpse into one of the region’s most impressive natural features—a sprawling bald cypress swamp with trees estimated to be over 1,000 years old. This elevated wooden walkway winds gently above clear waters, allowing visitors to experience the majesty of towering cypress and tupelo trees without leaving a footprint on the delicate ecosystem. The serene environment is alive with native wildlife including birds, turtles, dragonflies, and snakes, making it a vibrant spot for nature enthusiasts.

What sets this boardwalk apart is its accessibility and educational value. The path is designed to be wheelchair-friendly and child-friendly, with benches spaced along the way for quiet moments of reflection. At the boardwalk’s end, a lower deck invites guests to pause and absorb the towering forest canopy, giving a sense of connection to Mississippi’s natural heritage. Occasional seasonal flooding can submerge sections of the path under water levels that rise above six feet, illustrating the dynamic nature of these wetlands.

The Sky Lake area protects a crucial habitat within a biodiversity-rich ecosystem, providing valuable insight into the importance of swamp preservation in the Delta region. Visitors often marvel at the stillness and profound sense of time passing slowly among these giant trees. A well-maintained picnic area and modern restrooms support comfortable visits, making the boardwalk an inviting destination for families and solo travelers alike.
