Shackleford Banks

Coastal Charm at Shackleford Banks

Shackleford Banks lies just off the coast of Beaufort, North Carolina, offering a rare and striking example of a natural barrier island left mostly untouched by development. This isolated stretch of sandy shore reveals sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean and Cape Lookout National Seashore, making it a standout destination for visitors seeking serene coastal beauty. What truly distinguishes Shackleford Banks is its population of wild horses, believed to descend from Spanish mustangs brought over centuries ago. These iconic animals roam freely across the island, creating a living link to history and an unforgettable sight against the backdrop of soft dunes and crystal-clear waters.

The island features wide, quiet beaches perfect for walking, shell collecting, and photographing. Its calm inland side is ideal for wading and swimming, with water sometimes only reaching knee height far offshore. The terrain includes sandy dunes dotted with native sea oats and coastal plants, providing habitats for diverse bird species and other wildlife. Adding to the charm is the nearby historic Cape Lookout Lighthouse, visible across the water and offering context to the island’s place within the Outer Banks chain.

Visitors appreciate the quiet, natural atmosphere, with no permanent structures obstructing the landscape and only ferry access allowing limited numbers to visit. The lack of paved walkways or commercial facilities ensures an authentic experience with minimal human impact—just wide open space, nature, and the rare sight of horses living in the wild. Shackleford Banks is a peaceful retreat where coastal beauty and wildlife come together to offer one of North Carolina’s most memorable outdoor escapes.
