Proposal Rock

Coastal Landmark: Proposal Rock in Neskowin, Oregon

Proposal Rock is a striking natural formation located along the Oregon Coast near the peaceful town of Neskowin. This tall sea stack rises dramatically from the sandy beach, topped with lush trees and moss, making it a rare and captivating sight on this part of the coastline. What sets Proposal Rock apart is its intriguing shape combined with the surrounding tide pools and the nearby ancient Neskowin Ghost Forest, visible during low tide. The rock’s silhouette is especially stunning at sunset when the sky turns vibrant shades of orange and pink, reflecting off the wet sand and shallow waters.

This geological marvel is made of basalt, a volcanic rock typical of the Pacific Northwest, shaped by thousands of years of wave erosion. Visitors often find themselves drawn to the rock’s natural beauty as well as the local story from the late 1800s: a ship captain is said to have proposed to his future bride here, giving the rock its romantic name. Access to Proposal Rock is easiest during low tide, when the water recedes enough to allow visitors to walk right up to its base and nearby tide pools, where small marine creatures often gather.

The surrounding area offers a quiet beach setting where families, photographers, and nature lovers can enjoy leisurely walks or just take in the ocean air. The combination of coastal vegetation, ocean views, and fascinating geology makes Proposal Rock a memorable destination on the Oregon Coast.
