Edge of the World: A Desert Marvel

Edge of the World: Dramatic Cliffs Near Riyadh

The Edge of the World, or Jebel Fihrayn, is a striking geological formation located near Riyadh in Saudi Arabia’s vast desert landscape. This spectacular escarpment features towering cliffs plunging almost vertically into endless desert plains, offering panoramic views that stretch to the horizon—giving the sensation of standing at the world’s boundary. The cliffs rise roughly 300 meters (about 1,000 feet) and form part of the ancient Tuwaiq Mountain range, carved by natural forces over millions of years.

What sets this destination apart is its unique desert setting combined with dramatic topography rarely seen in the region. The rock’s pale limestone layers reveal an ancient seabed transformed across eons into a rugged and barren landscape. The scene is stark but captivating, with sparse desert vegetation and occasional wildlife such as desert foxes adding subtle life to the vast emptiness. Local culture weaves through the site, with old Bedouin routes once crossing the cliffs, linking it to centuries of Arabian trade and travel history.

Visitors often come to witness breathtaking sunsets, when the sun casts golden and reddish hues over sharp ridges and vast horizons, creating a striking natural spectacle. The remote feel and sheer scale make the Edge of the World a standout destination, offering a rare blend of adventure, natural beauty, and cultural heritage just outside Saudi Arabia’s capital region.
