About Middle Fork Willamette River Wild and Scenic River

The Middle Fork Willamette River Wild and Scenic River offers a pristine river corridor famed for its rushing waters, old-growth forests, and abundant recreational opportunities including fishing, hiking, and whitewater paddling.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Middle Fork Willamette River Wild and Scenic River is a protected segment of the Middle Fork Willamette River in western Oregon, known for its rugged terrain and ecological richness. The river stretches approximately 35 miles through the western Cascades, flowing from the glaciers and snowfields near the Three Sisters Wilderness downstream to its confluence with the Coast Fork Willamette River. It supports a diverse ecosystem including Oregon’s native fish, old-growth Douglas fir and western hemlock forests, and varied wildlife such as black bears, cougars, and bald eagles. Historical use by Native American tribes preceded modern European-American settlement, with the river corridor retaining much of its natural condition due to conservation efforts. The Wild and Scenic designation helps maintain water quality and habitat integrity amid increasing recreational use. Visitors are drawn to the area for its excellent whitewater rafting and kayaking, especially during spring runoff, as well as year-round fishing for steelhead and trout. There are numerous hiking and mountain biking trails that connect to the surrounding Middle Fork Ranger District and nearby Drift Creek Wilderness, offering opportunities for solitude and nature observation. The rugged river gorge has several notable landmarks including Middle Fork Campground and the scenic views at Hills Creek Reservoir. Remote and largely accessible only by forest roads and trails, the Middle Fork Willamette River corridor appeals to outdoor enthusiasts seeking a wild river experience with significant ecological and recreational value.
