Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Sequoyah State Park is located on the western shores of Lake Tenkiller, one of Oklahoma’s premier recreational lakes, spanning the rugged terrain of the foothills of the Ozark Mountains. The park covers approximately 2,700 acres of mixed hardwood forests, bluffs, and waterways, offering visitors a diverse outdoor experience. The lake itself stretches nearly 13,000 acres, providing ample opportunities for fishing species such as bass, crappie, and catfish, as well as boaters and paddle sport enthusiasts. The park’s forested hills are home to various flora including oak, hickory, and pine, and it is also habitat for wildlife such as white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and diverse bird species. Originally developed in the 1950s along with the creation of Lake Tenkiller, the park has grown in amenities and recreational programs. Visitors can explore over 40 miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking, ranging from easy lakeside strolls to challenging forest routes. Popular activities include camping in developed campgrounds with full hookups, picnicking, and seasonal fishing tournaments. Notable landmarks include the Sequoyah Museum showcasing Cherokee history and the nearby Tenkiller Ferry Dam, a scenic infrastructure feature surrounded by natural beauty. The park’s varied terrain, water access, and well-maintained facilities make it a favorite destination for families, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts throughout the year.
