Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Prophetstown State Park is located just south of the Rock River near the city of Prophetstown in Whiteside County, Illinois. Covering approximately 1,200 acres, it preserves a mix of native prairie, wetlands, and hardwood forest habitats that support diverse wildlife including deer, turkeys, and numerous bird species. The park honors the legacy of the nearby historic village of Prophetstown, a 19th-century Native American settlement founded by the Sauk and Fox tribes under the leadership of Tenskwatawa, the Shawnee Prophet. Visitors can explore hiking and mountain biking trails that wind through restored tallgrass prairie and bur oak groves, as well as a nature center that highlights local ecology and indigenous history. The park’s location on the Rock River floodplain offers opportunities for fishing and paddling. In addition to outdoor recreation, the park hosts educational programs focusing on natural history and Native American culture. Its combination of open landscape and wooded areas attracts photographers and bird watchers year-round. Prophetstown State Park is a family-friendly destination with picnic facilities and seasonal events, making it a popular spot for both recreation and learning. Due to its proximity to several small Illinois towns and its accessible trail network, it offers a peaceful natural retreat close to urban conveniences.
