About Point Mugu State Park

Point Mugu State Park offers dramatic coastal scenery, rugged mountains, and a network of trails ideal for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding along California’s scenic Pacific coast.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located within the Santa Monica Mountains in Ventura County, California, Point Mugu State Park spans over 15,000 acres of diverse landscapes ranging from steep ocean bluffs and sandy beaches to chaparral-covered hills and shaded canyons. The park borders the Pacific Ocean along its western edge, providing stunning views of the coastline, including the iconic Boney Mountain. Ecologically, the park supports a range of habitats such as coastal sage scrub, oak woodlands, and riparian areas, hosting species including mule deer, bobcats, and a variety of birdlife. Historically, the Chumash people inhabited this region for thousands of years, and the park’s trails pass close to some of their ancient sites. Established in 1967, the park is popular for outdoor enthusiasts seeking hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, camping, and wildlife observation. Notable landmarks include the scenic Mugu Peak, La Jolla Canyon, and Sycamore Canyon, all of which offer extensive trails. The park’s access to both coastal and inland terrain provides a range of recreational opportunities, from beach access to challenging mountain hikes. Visitors are attracted to its mix of ocean vistas, rugged mountains, and extensive trail system, making it a prime destination for day trips and overnight camping near the Los Angeles metropolitan area.
