Wilderness Wonders in the Santa Monica Mountains

Scenic Natural Beauty at Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area

Located near Calabasas, California, the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area offers a striking blend of rugged hills, sweeping ocean views, and diverse wildlife, all within reach of the bustling Los Angeles metro area. Covering nearly 500 square miles, this vast outdoor space is one of the largest urban national parks in the United States. It stands out not only for its scenic variety but also for its history of preservation, established in 1978 to protect Southern California’s unique coastal and mountainous habitats.

The park’s landscape features dramatic peaks such as Sandstone Peak—the highest point in the range—which rewards visitors with panoramic views stretching from the Pacific Ocean to the distant San Gabriel Mountains. Rolling chaparral-covered hills, quiet oak woodlands, and vibrant fields of wildflowers appear throughout the seasons. Visitors might spot native wildlife like mountain lions, bobcats, and the endangered red-legged frog, making it an intriguing destination for naturalists. Geologically, the rugged rock formations are reminiscent of Colorado’s Garden of the Gods, with balanced boulders and scenic cliffs found along popular trails like Mishe Mokwa and Echo Cliffs.

Adding to its appeal, the park includes cultural landmarks such as the filming site of the classic TV series MASH*, which connects outdoor adventure with local Hollywood history. Whether pausing for quiet reflection by hidden streams or hiking long ridges bathed in California sunshine, visitors find in these mountains a refreshing escape from urban life and a place to witness the region’s natural and cultural richness.
