Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Lake Tenkiller State Park is located in eastern Oklahoma, on the shores of Lake Tenkiller, a large reservoir formed by damming the Illinois River. The park spans over 600 acres and provides access to approximately 12,900 acres of water, known for its clear depths and abundant fish species. The area features mixed hardwood forests, rocky bluffs, and gently rolling hills, offering diverse habitats for wildlife including deer, bald eagles, and various migratory birds. Established in the 1950s following completion of the Tenkiller Ferry Dam, the lake was designed primarily for flood control, hydroelectric power, and recreation. The state park was developed to support public access and outdoor activities centered on the water and surrounding landscape. Visitors enjoy boating, with several marinas and boat ramps available, as well as excellent fishing opportunities for bass, crappie, catfish, and trout, including a trout stocking program in the lake’s Illinois River tailwaters. Trails within the park provide hiking and mountain biking options through forested areas and along the shoreline, with scenic overlooks highlighting panoramic views of the lake. The park also offers developed campgrounds, picnic areas, playgrounds, and a marina complex with rental facilities.
