Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Deep Creek Lake State Park protects shoreline, forest, wetlands and recreation facilities on and around Deep Creek Lake in western Maryland’s Garrett County. The centerpiece is Deep Creek Lake, a large reservoir set in a glaciated plateau and rolling ridge landscape; the lake’s long shoreline, coves and shallow flats create a diversity of aquatic and wetland habitats that support waterfowl, songbirds, amphibians and popular sport fish. Surrounding uplands are mixed hardwoods — oaks, maples and hickories — with pockets of evergreen stands and riparian corridors that provide habitat for white-tailed deer, red fox, and migratory birds. The park’s modern recreational infrastructure focuses on lake access: boat launches and marinas, a sandy swim beach, picnic areas and developed campgrounds. In summer the park is best known for boating, paddle sports and family swimming; anglers pursue stocked trout as well as largemouth and smallmouth bass, walleye and panfish. Fall brings vibrant foliage and popular weekends; winter transforms the area into a cold-weather playground with nearby downhill skiing, snow tubing and snowmobiling opportunities on permitted corridors. The park also functions as a gateway to nearby public lands and private recreation (including ski resorts and trail systems) around McHenry and Oakland. Management priorities include balancing heavy seasonal recreation with shoreline protection, invasive aquatic plant control, and habitat conservation for breeding birds and aquatic species. Its combination of accessible water recreation, family-friendly facilities, and proximity to mountain recreation makes Deep Creek Lake State Park one of Maryland’s most-visited state parks.
