Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Loch Raven Reservoir, situated approximately 15 miles north of downtown Baltimore, Maryland, is one of the key water supply sources for Baltimore City and surrounding communities. The reservoir spans about 2,400 acres of water, surrounded by a forested watershed area that provides habitat for a variety of local flora and fauna. Established in the early 20th century with an earthen dam completed in 1914 and expanded in the 1920s, Loch Raven represents a blend of engineering and natural resource conservation. The reservoir and its surrounding lands support diverse ecosystems including mixed hardwood forests, wetlands, and riparian zones that are home to species such as white-tailed deer, various waterfowl, and migrating songbirds. Due to its proximity to an urban center, Loch Raven is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy fishing, hiking, picnicking, and birdwatching. While swimming is prohibited to protect water quality, regulated boating and catch-and-release fishing for species like largemouth bass are popular. The reservoir features several trails including the scenic Loch Raven Trail, providing opportunities for peaceful walks and nature observation. Its historic dam and the peaceful rural setting add to its visitor appeal. Loch Raven Reservoir's combination of protected watershed and recreational access makes it a unique green space that balances human needs with natural preservation.
