Lake Wanalain Recreation Area is located in northern Colorado within the Routt National Forest, near Steamboat Springs. The area centers around the reservoir known as Lake Wanalain, which sits at approximately 8,400 feet elevation. Surrounded by the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest, the recreation area is characterized by mixed conifer forests with lodgepole pine, spruce, and fir species. The lake itself provides warm-water fishing opportunities, primarily for species such as largemouth bass, yellow perch, and various panfish. Visitors also enjoy the campground facilities, which offer lakeside camping with tent and RV sites.
