Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Tenkiller Wildlife Management Area (WMA) encompasses approximately 20,000 acres of land adjacent to and around Lake Tenkiller in eastern Oklahoma. The landscape is characterized by mixed hardwood forests, river bottomlands, and rugged bluffs overlooking the Illinois River and the expansive reservoir. Established to protect game species and their habitats, the WMA is managed primarily for hunting, fishing, and wildlife observation. Diverse wildlife includes white-tailed deer, wild turkey, waterfowl, and numerous small game species as well as a variety of fish in the lake, which is known for bass, crappie, and catfish. Visitors can enjoy multiple outdoor activities such as fishing, boating, hiking, and birdwatching. The area includes public boat ramps and access points to Lake Tenkiller, which is a popular site for water sports. Trails within the WMA offer opportunities to explore the forested hills and river corridors, with scenic vistas overlooking Lake Tenkiller and the Illinois River valley. The area's history is tied to both its native Cherokee heritage and later conservation efforts that created a managed habitat for game and non-game species alike. Tenkiller Wildlife Management Area’s mix of aquatic and terrestrial environments appeals to anglers, hunters, photographers, and nature lovers, making it a multifaceted destination for outdoor recreation in Oklahoma. The proximity to the town of Vian and nearby state parks complements the visitor experience with amenities and additional access points.
