About Smith Mountain Lake Natural Preserve

Smith Mountain Lake Natural Preserve protects critical habitats along the shores of Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia, offering tranquil scenery and diverse outdoor recreational opportunities focused on water activities and nature appreciation.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Smith Mountain Lake Natural Preserve, located in southwestern Virginia, encompasses several thousand acres of protected forested shoreline and adjacent waterways of Smith Mountain Lake, one of the largest man-made lakes in the state. The preserve features rugged ridges, hardwood forests, and wetlands that blend seamlessly with the lake’s 20,600 acres of clear water. This area is an important refuge for a variety of wildlife including bald eagles, osprey, and numerous migratory birds, as well as native fish species like largemouth bass and catfish.

The preserve offers opportunities for fishing, boating, kayaking, and hiking along scenic shoreline trails and nearby ridges. Its relatively undeveloped nature provides a peaceful setting for wildlife viewing and bird watching. Historically, the region was shaped by the construction of the Smith Mountain Dam in the 1960s, which created the lake and subsequently led to conservation efforts to protect shoreline ecosystems. The preserve’s forests consist primarily of oak-hickory and pine species, with pockets of rare native plant communities.

Visitors are drawn to the natural beauty and water-based recreation, with access points and public parks nearby enhancing its appeal. Though the area itself lacks extensive developed facilities, its integration with surrounding public lands and recreational marinas makes it a favored destination for regional outdoor enthusiasts. Its combination of forested landscapes and expansive lake waters offers diverse opportunities for exploration and relaxation in a natural setting.
