Carvins Cove Natural Reserve, located just outside Salem, Virginia, stands out as one of the largest municipal parks in the United States, covering over 12,000 acres of protected forestland and fresh water. This expansive natural area is prized for its massive reservoir, which supplies clean drinking water while offering a peaceful setting for outdoor activities. The reserve’s extensive trail network winds through rugged terrain, quiet woods, and alongside pristine streams, making it one of the region’s premier spots for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and paddling.

A key highlight is the Carvins Cove Reservoir itself, where calm waters reflect the surrounding Appalachian foothills, providing a perfect backdrop for kayakers and anglers.
