Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Shelby Bottoms Nature Center & Greenway is a 960-acre urban natural area located along the Cumberland River on the eastern edge of Nashville, Tennessee. It includes wetlands, bottomland hardwood forests, and open meadows that provide habitat for a wide variety of birds, mammals, amphibians, and aquatic species. The greenway is part of Nashville’s greenbelt network, connecting neighborhoods and offering a natural respite within the city. The Nature Center serves as a hub for environmental education, community events, and hands-on learning programs centered on ecology and conservation. History of the area shows it was once floodplain land used for agriculture before being developed into a dedicated urban green space. Recreational opportunities include hiking, mountain biking, birdwatching, and paddling on the Cumberland River. Key landmarks consist of the Nature Center building, scenic river overlooks, and the interconnected multi-use trails. Visitors often come to experience wildlife watching, especially migratory birds, as well as educational programs for families and school groups. The greenway’s accessibility and variety of habitats make it a valuable resource for urban outdoor enthusiasts looking to enjoy nature without leaving the city limits.
