About Pohorje Landscape Park

Pohorje Landscape Park is a scenic protected area in northeastern Slovenia known for its dense forests, rolling hills, and rich biodiversity, offering abundant opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, and winter sports.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Pohorje Landscape Park (Slovene: Krajinski park Pohorje) encompasses the Pohorje mountain range, situated south of the Drava River in northeastern Slovenia. The area is characterized by gently rolling hills, extensive beech and spruce forests, peat bogs, and crystal-clear mountain streams. Covering a large portion of the Pohorje massif, the park's elevation ranges from about 300 meters to just over 1,500 meters above sea level, with its highest peak being Črni Vrh at 1,543 meters. The park protects a diverse mosaic of ecosystems including subalpine meadows and wetlands, which harbor numerous endemic and rare plant species such as the edelweiss and various orchids. Wildlife in the park includes red deer, roe deer, chamois, wild boar, and numerous bird species like capercaillie and woodpeckers.

Historically, the Pohorje region has been valued for its natural resources and as a recreational area, with settlements dating back to medieval times. Today, the landscape park status ensures conservation of its unique environment while permitting sustainable tourism and outdoor recreation. Forest roads, marked hiking and biking trails, and ski resorts provide access throughout the year. Popular outdoor activities include hiking through pristine natural forests, mountain biking on specially maintained routes, cross-country and alpine skiing during winter, as well as mushroom and berry picking. Notable attractions include the Ribniško Pohorje area with ski lifts, the picturesque Black Lake (Črno jezero), and the historic Rogla ski center. The park appeals to nature lovers, families, and adventure seekers looking to explore the tranquil Slovenian highlands.
